In each wheel there is a spring loaded cam that powers the shaft when going forward yet allows you to back up. One of these is broken and the spring gone. I am trying to find a replacement.

I have seen two different hubs, one is narrow on each side, kind of like a bicycle hub and one the is barrel shape like a wagon wheel. Not sure if the parts are the same between the two or not but I do have a spare set. Can you post a pic of your hub?

I would have to pull it apart to make sure they are good but they should be. I can hear it clicking when moving it around to mow under it.

First off we have to establish just what you have. The New Idea rake lot R-163 Is a No. 4 rake 4-bar on steel wheels and is the last lot of 3 made in 1952. There was an aftermarket whel made foe a 4:00 X 36" tire that is on some. Now for your problem. Those are NOT the correct number for those parts, the cast piece is called Driving pawl with part number O 249 and there are 3 of them used. The right wheel uses 1 but the left wheel uses 2, one for the wide wheel setting and one for the narrow wheel setting, both are never used at the same time and the narrow setting is almost never used so a lot were taken from that setting to be used on the others. The pin that holds it on is part number M 977 crosses to K 2271, Rivet W.B. head1/4 x 1 3/8", cross drilled for K 1066 spring, cotter 3/32 x 1/2" and the spring is M 955 Compression spring, 9/16" O.D., 1 7/8" long, with 9 coils. I just go to the hardware store and buy a 3" long spring and cut it off to correct length and I just use a 1 1/2" cap screw with a double nut to hold things on. The people I work with probably have the pawl in stock, it is slightly different than the orignal but is aftermarket. That model rake was built in lots R-116 starting in 1948 to Lot R-169 ending in 1953 but the Rake changed to model number 44 and continued on till R-192 in 1958 but the 3 bar rake used those same parts and was built in lots R-57 starting in 1934 to 1947 when they went to the 4 bar instead of the 3 bar. Over the last several years I have rebuilt several, possibly 2 dozen of those rakes with most going to a dealer for resale with several here to do now as soon as I can get started after a heart proceduare last thursday as he is currently out of the rakes for sale. My books start with the Sandwish-New Idea being built 1925 - 1934 and going to 1958 and including the low wheel rubber tired models of No. 45-G and No. 47 and the book is dated April 1, 1969 With the last rake of that style being Lot R-192. The parallel bar rakes I do not have the information on if your rake could be Lot R-263 instead of R-163 and that rake could have the part numbers listed. I plan to be out to see the suplier and the dealer I work with on tuesday evening so if you want me to get you a pawl then I need to know in plenty of time. The parts supplier is in Berne, In. if you are close. Opening my email.

If you would be thinking of pulling out that part then you are not planning on using it so would it be for sale complete and if so where as the dealer I work with is always looking for rakes for me to rebuild. I am at Wapakoneta, Oh.

Thanks for your reply. I do need the Driving pawl, spring and pin. Sorry I could not get back in advance of Tuesday evening. I checked for the their pawl you mentioned buy as you guessed it is gone. Is it still possible to get them. Or should I contact the dealer you mentioned in Berne, In? What is the contact into?
