Cyclo 800 pressure issue 2

Appreciate all the replies below. Today we focused on two things. First I worked the pressure control valve loose and then turned it clockwise one full turn. We started with 3 OSI on the gauge and with one full turn down it jumped to 5 OSI. Needless to say this made us pretty happy so I turned it clockwise another full turn and pressure fell off again to 3 OSI. No joy. Anyone familiar enough with these pumps to tell me what this might mean? Bad pressure control valve or bad pump?

While it was up and running I tarped the seed drum holes to get rid of the draft from them and took some fine grass and held it around every seam...drum seal, riveted tank joint, tank lid seal, fan shroud...and I found no more leaks.

Lastly, we raised the planter and filled the drum with seed. Powered up our pump and manually turned the seed drum. Drum held seed in all holes. When the holes came around to the rubber rollers the seed dropped off the drum and fired out past the sensors and onto the ground. It was coming out all 8 tubes. I collected the seed after the test and had 320 seeds which divided by 8 rows came out to 40. Important to me was it was evenly divided by 8. So the tubes are not clogged and operation is completely normal. We just don't read full pressure on the gauge.

Wondering what you more experienced guys think of the above?

If its holding the seeds in all holes until the rollers let them drop,it sounds like you are ready to try planting with it....Your air pressure gauge may not be working right.....They are a heck of a lot cheaper than a new pump....Even with a new pump and no air leaks I always had the pump pressure adjustment maxed completely out..

These planters are a joy to run when things are right but are a real pain when they arent right..Mine tried my patience several times..

I have been watching your topic, trying to think if I had anything to add to what has already been suggested. with your latest post, I have a couple questions.

did you try cranking the pressure valve all the way down, then back a half or full turn? I'm just wondering if it would increase the reading. or maybe the gauge has been squirrelly all along.

did you count the seeds from 1 revolution of the drum? my planter drum has 24 rows of holes; ideally, I should have 23 or 24 seeds put out per row from 1 revolution. maybe your drum has 40 rows?

I have the best results from planting seeds that weigh up to about 45#/ unit(bag). the ones that are up around 55-58# take more air, and slowing down a gear helps the population too. my gauge is usually around 8 oz.

if you are getting a satisfactory number of seeds/ revolution by hand turning the drum, I would try planting with it regardless of what the gauge says. a bag of seed should do 2 1/2 acres roughly, so if you were doing 5 acres, and 2 bags disappear, be happy. sometimes getting everything set perfectly can make you crazy, especially when it starts raining just as you are finally ready to go.

Heaven knows I have had a trial with it this week. However, Mrs Dave decided to dig out the invoice from when I bought it and called the fella. He had a lot of good advice and observations from his years using it. He thinks I should plant also but told me if I want a new pump they sell them at Harbor Freight. Turns out he had never used the 1000 pto pump because his tractor only has 540. When he traded up to a 900 he put the old pump back on the unit. He had another idea and I am going to run with it. Was suggested in a previous post that I run off the tractor remotes using one connection only to power the pump with an in line relief valve and taking the return connection back to the tractor sump via the drain plug. Going to have my dealer do it just to be safe...or at least have them put it all together for me and then I will install.

Boy you hit that nail square on the head! I am making myself crazy. I did crank the valve down but did not take it back up. Wish I had and will probably try it before the service guy arrives. I have the same drum you have but did not count to see if we went around more than once. It is definitely planting but the sensors for three rows are reporting no flow. They could have been dirty...don't know. I am going to have my dealer bypass the whole pump setup and run it off the tractor. The 1586 has plenty of capacity I am sure. I appreciate you jumping in. Stay tuned...this may not be over yet!

It also sounds to me like everything is working fine but the gauge is reading wrong. Personally I think you should plant with it and just check at the end rows, it will usually spit some out as you lift and are moving, check the four closest each time from your cab as you are turning on the ends. The bad thing about running off the tractor hydraulics, and I think I mentioned this, you will have to stop at the end rows to lift the planter. My 1586 has an open center hydraulic system, if yours is the same you will have to stop at the end rows because it takes about 10 seconds for it to lift, if your 1586 is a late model with closed center hydraulics you should have more flow and it should lift okay, you may or may not have to stop at the end rows. Long fields its not a problem, short fields it can be a pain. My older 1466 had a weaker system, and that one I actually had to shut the fan off, lift planter, and then engage fan again, with this tractor I would lower the planter a planter width sooner so the drum would fill by the time I got past the end rows. Its a catch 22, the tractor hydraulics work good going down the field and will hold good pressure, but lifting is a problem, with a weak pto pump your pressure is marginal, but you can lift and turn on the ends like it was meant to be. Good luck with your adventure, I always thought the 800 was a good planter, but it was a love/hate relationship. I am not a big deere fan, but that 7200 I planted with this year has been enjoyable to plant with.

I am going to check to see if I can figure out if I have open or closed center hydraulics. Tractor is supposed to be a from the last year or two of production but I don't frankly remember the year of it...too darn busy all the time hunting up the other equipment needed for the project. I have had the tractor for about 8 months and my only complaint would be could the doors be reversed.

An elevator would be nice for days when I am working on the planter and have to get up and down a lot. Or maybe a remote control. :)

Everyone is telling me the same thing and just had it confirmed by the IH service guy I deal with. He owns an 800 too and has firmly told me that the thing is planting. Basically what everyone here is telling me too. A couple grand in seed can make one a little nervous I guess, but it is time to quit worrying about it and get out there. Sure do appreciate all the help from everybody! I will post back good or bad and let you know how it went!
