NH L shape double rake hitch

Just got this thing and wanting some advice on set up. I have a 256 dolly wheel and a 256 regular hitch. Should I use the dolly in the front or the rear. Also wondering if anyone has ever seen any kind of owners manual for one of these. Thanks

Dont think it matters where the dolly rake is placed. If it were mine,I'd get rid of the dolly(if possible) and hook right to the 'hitch'.

If you are going to leave it hooked up all the time, it won't matter. If you have to take it down the road or through narrow gate, put the dolly rake in the rear, makes it a lot easier hitching and unhitching.

I am not sure if that hitch was made to carry hitch weight of a non-dolly wheeled rake. Any set ups I have ever seen, they used 2 rakes, both with dolly wheels. If thats the case, the non dolly wheel rake should be hitched to the tractor. Otherwise, I don't see why it couldnt be hooked up which ever way. My 2 cents.

I avoided getting one for years because I thought they needed dolly rakes. Then I saw a NH ad that showed straight hitches on the rakes, and got one ASAP.

When I had one, neither of my rakes had dollys. The weight of each rake hitch actually balanced it out pretty good. If just one rake on the front and none on the rear, the front became very heavy. It's a real bear to try and get them hooked up without dollys, so I tried to do it as little as possible.

We still have our 2 rake set up. We run the rake with the dolly wheels on the back. My thoughts are the weight is on the front of the hitch by using the rake with no dolly in the front.

I run one with two non-dolly style 258s. One trick I've found is to use the jack of the front rake to hold the L-hitch off the ground when hooking or unhooking from the tractor.

I would tend to want the dolly hitch rake on the back since (if it was hooked on the front) it might swing into the side of the L-hitch if you make a sharp turn, but it may not matter. As pointed out earlier, this would also make hooking and unhooking the rear rake a lot easier.

Just in case you didn't know, you can set up the hitch to rake a double windrow or two single windrows by flipping the hitch over and reversing the front wheel mount (just held on with 4 bolts). It is a little more cumbersome than the newer style tandem hitches that swing hydraulically, but it's still far better then running a single rake all the time.
