Can someone help identify my John Deere rake serial number is LR2 13950 with a hand stamped 5 in the space between the numbers. I think its either a 850,851,858 or 858a. I need to get two bar bearings with the square shaft are these the same across all these models ?
thanks

The serial # prefix LR2 was used on model 851 rake.. It was JD's first Roll-a-Bar rake,.. 1952..They were all green , no yellow frame , 858& 858A.. PC- 234, on JD parts.

What is the pc-234 and it is all green except for the wheels. In the archives someone said the last digit is the year so 1950 or 1960?

Pc-234, is parts catalog no.; For 850 series rakes , Which are models , 851 ,858, & 858A ( A indicates rubber mount tooth) View it a www.jdparts.com .......851 rakes were made 1952 to 1959, I'm sure serial # has no reference to age of rake....

Jim : To best of my limited knowledge, Roll-A-bar was a New Holland trade name, like Haybind, is ; I don't think Deere ever used them.. Deere first called the 851 a Right-Angle Reel, side rake... And the 594 a Side Delivery Rake.. We just called them a basket rake, basic design went way back to the Dain rake... "A flash back" I can remember raking meadows for my Dad , with 37" B & 3 bar [wood bar holding rake teeth]Dain side delivery rake... And the B was only about ten
yrs. old......

No offense intended but you were the one that utilized the name "roll-a-bar" for a JD rake not me. I was just questioning you about that 850 series being the "first JD model" by that description. I wish I had your wealth of JD knowledge.

So would you remember any details about that Dain rake as to if it like some other Deere machines of that time had red on them or would it have been all green or green and yellow? Also what in decals but it would have been silk screening I think. What kind of wood was used in the bars? I have a good one here but since I got it it had to set out and the wood rotted. Want to take to show end of May featuring Deere along with 450 Deere planter and 902 Deere wagon and 116 Deere baler.

Pic of some old lit. , might help with painting ; I'd be pretty sure that wood on bars is a hard maple, As for decal I'd just stencil John Deere - Dain....

It's odd how any wisdom a person might gain with age , is lost to "a senior moment" ,or overtaken by the habits a person develops over the years, I sure have that problem, [I should have thought before hitting the keys] I have the habit of calling every brand right angle rake a Roll-A-bar, & every brand mower cond. even 1209's 1219's etc. a Haybind. Can't get use to the label Moco... Jim: Ain't it a Buckaroo, to get to be an old farmer??..... Pics LOL.
