John Deere 1240 Corn Planter Finger Pickup Mechanism

I purchased a JD 1240 corn planter a few years back and I'm just trying to get it up and going. When I tried to pull it today the shaft that drives the planters kept disengaging. I pulled open the planter pickup units and 3 of them were packed with crud, old corn, etc. This tripped the device so the chains wouldn't break. I need to replace these to get my corn planted. Can anyone tell me where to go to get replacements? I can email photos to confirm what I'm after.

JD dealer is the source for parts that I used. Those planters are nice when working, but fussy about being clean. I took each row unit apart, cleaned it completely. If I remember they must spin by hand. And make sure you buy some graphite powder to lube the unit while planting.

I had no idea that John Deere would still support these planters. I'll check on Monday. If anyone out there knows where I could get some used ones, please let me know.

Check with Shoup or Sloan Express. They show parts for the 7000 series, not sure if they are the same as yours or not. Phone calls are cheap. Carefully take the unit apart. If there is rust on the fingers or back plates, you will have to replace them. Clean them good before reassembly. When I had one of those 30 some yeas ago, I was told to put some diesel fuel on the shafts and then put powdered graphite on them and turn them by hand to work the graphite into them. When finished, they should turn by hand with just a little resistance. Do you have a manual for the planter, it should tell you how to take the units apart and clean and set them. Hope this helps, Chris
