john deere doall

I saw a john deere doall today and could buy it for 500 dollars. it was 12 foot wide and looked to be in working condition. all I may ever need it for would be to smooth out plowed ground for pastures. in the past I have always used a harrow but this doall looked like it would smooth the ground pretty good. is this what it's designed to do or is this used in preparing a seed bed only.

I have never used a doall and the 500 dollars price tag got my attention.

I have never had the chance to use one but the snap bean guys around here used them. They left the ground smooth and clod free.I would grab it in a minute at that price and condition. Lee

I Think but not sure it has a roller digger tines and then a smoothing board I've got the brochure but I'm not sure what boxe its in .

(quoted from post at 02:32:44 04/19/14) What the heck is a "duall"?

I don't know if the OP is talking about the same thing, but I'll have a stab at it.

I think the first tools like this came from the Forrest City Machine Works. They called the tool the "Forrest City Do-All". IH, Noble, Will-Rich, Deere, and and a few others had similar machines. I think Forrest City even made or designed a few of them for other manufacturers. All had a rolling basket incorporated into the machine somewhere. Other tooling varied. They were intended to make final seedbed preparation in a single pass, bust up clay clods, and chop up weeds.

Dad has an IH 468 "soil finisher". Essentially a "Do-All". 2 rows of vibra-shanks, a rolling basket, several rows of spike teeth and spring-loaded boards on the back. There was an IH/CIH 568 machine that was built later, too.

the owner called it a doall but looking on line some may call it a soil finisher or one pass tillage.

going on memory the first stage was a light chisel plow followed by a roller that would chop, next was a row of disc and on the very back were some spikes that would drag but were suspended by chains.

I purchased an Athens 156 chisel plow from the guy and he said he would let the doall go to but at the time I past on the doall. I just didn't think i would need it but the 2 hrs drive home got me to thinking.

thanks for the replies

I pulled a 8 row model over what at the time seemed like a million acres. Pulled it with a JD 4630, real good rig. It prepared a good smooth seedbed and incorporated the Treflan into the seedbed. We ran this behind another tractor pulling a disc. Then we planted, this was back before no-till became the rage.
