Ford 305 Side delivery rake are tine shields really needed?

I only have 5 tine shields and they are placed on the bars around where the pulleys are.

The manual calls for all tines to have a shields. The shields are 20” long by 5” wide with
2 holes held in place by the tines.

Can I use this hay rake with out the shields? Why are the shields need? Anyone used this type of rake without shields?

Thanks for your help.

You mean a Ford 503?
One of my 503's is missing some of the bar shields.
Age and fatigue led to the bolt holes being too big
to keep them on. Not a big issue, but sometimes some
of the hay gets caught in the springs on the teeth.
As a plus, changing teeth is easier.

Mine has all of them on but I have run it without the stripper. Works it it's not windy and windrows aren't too big. I can't keep the bearing on the left end more than two or three seasons and I do less than 2000.

Dyslexic a little type letter backwards, yes I mine 503 rake. So this is there a way to grease the bearing
I find no grease serts.

thanks

What bearing are you talking about? PTO, bar wheel bearing and do you know of a way to grease the bearing?
So without the big stripper bar in the front the wind rows are bigger? I am guessing for the old balers Ford put this stripper bar in front to make the wind rows more compact.

Thanks

He probably means the (sealed) bearing on the outer
end of the rotary stripper.
The stripper doesn't really change the size of the
windrow, but in heavy hay, it helps roll the windrow
forward and to the side, so it doesn't bunch up in
front of the bar wheel. Or blow over it, if it's
windy.

SUPER So do you know how I could regrease the bearing. Anyway to force grease in them?

Thanks

You could get one of those needles that fit on a
grease gun...use that to get some grease under the
seal. I've never tried that, but have heard it works
well. For the stripper bearings, you might also be
able to find a regreaseable bearing and flange in
the same size. The grease needle would be about the
only way to grease the tooth bar bearings.
