Fertilizing Oats

I have about a 4/10s acre food plot. I plan to put in some oats for forage and to add organic matter to the soil. The ground is sandy-loam. I planted cowpeas last year. Looking for options/opinions. I'm thinking 100 of 12-12-12 or 50# 12-12-12 and 50# urea. Don't care much about seed head or yield.

might want to back of on the nitrogen, they will get to be 6' tall and go down on you. They will then be a huge mess you will have to deal with.

I wouldn't do more N than that anyhow. Either would work well, if you don't care about the oats test weight you don't need that much N. the P and K help the stalk remain strong and root well in cold spring weather. Assuming you want the straw I'd focus on the p and k with a little n for growth.

Thanks for the input. I don't need the seed head or the straw. Just looking for forage for rabbits and deer and something to incorporate for soil improvement. I'll get to try my $35.00 grain drill I bought last fall. I'll plant 50 pounds to the acre.

For grain we like to plant 3 bu, or around 90 lbs per acre.

2 bu will be a nice cover crop and probably work fine. But you could go heavier if you wish.
