McCormick 80 combine ?'s

Surprised to spot a McCormick 80 combine down in the dirt this a.m. but under cover. I don't know combines but have always thought they look cool, neat, etc. This unit has a 'deep' pickup apparatus ahead of the auger. The friend I was with (we had talked about combines last fall) thought the McCormicks had canvas until the model 82 but obviously not. He didn't have much interest in the 80 as he was there to look at an AC square baler. He stated to the fellow that took us out to look at the baler, referring to me, "he's into McCormick stuff!" Am I out of my mind to be lookin' at this 80? I've got NO inside storage space (they take a big chunk out of a storage area) and NO acres to combine but the buildings are going to be demolished and the new owner wants the implements gone. I shudder to ask this oft asked ? but, what is it worth? It is not known when it was last used. Miles down the road I got to pondering the combine..."you don't see many around" he said. He kept on..."are you gonna get that combine? If the new property owner just calls a scrapper it will be gone." More miles down the road and I stated "Should I just put it out of my mind?" We shook our heads and laughed. Does anyone own an 80 that would be willing to measure the outside tire dimension for transport...my friend will probably be renting a trailer so...

I have an 80 combine that I hauled quite a ways. According to the manual it is 21 foot long, in the transport position approx 10 feet wide, in operating position it is approx 9 feet 3.75 inches tall, approx weight is 3365 lbs.
I hauled mine on a donahue trailer and both wheels were not on the deck of the trailer. I finally put blocks under the main axel took the wheels off and chained it down.
I put the trailer down on the ground then loaded the combine, it was a bit of a job getting the wheels back under the trailer , the combine is heavier than it looks.

If it has sat and you want to use it, just figure on replacing every bearing. Had one when they were new and there was always a bearing out, and this was on an implement that was always in the shed. Otherwise were a good machine. If not to far, just pull it. They road good.

Outside to outside it is 8" 6". The head will have to come off, but that is easy. I found one last spring, that was well cared for. I spent more on trucking than the machine. Dont know if I"ll ever get my money back, but I wanted one. Now its mine. The 80 is basicly the same as an 82, without the belt guard.

Not sure why the need to remove the head. I had both an 80 and an 82 in the past and they tow very well as is. Now, towing the AC 72 was not fun at all :evil:.

WE had a #61 6'cut and it had an auger not a canvas.
This was in the 40's & was used until 1956. I would
not fret over bearing replacement just buy a grease

No grease bearinbgs on a #80, all sealed bearings.

Can grease be pumped into the IH 82's bearings?

I used a needle tip to inject grease into the sealed bearings on my 82.

The head had to come off mine so it was not over width on the flat bed. In NY, anything over 8'6" is over width. Had it trucked from western Pa, to northern NY. Ive got a lot of grease fittings on this 80 McCormick, they do look factory, but some are sealed. Maybe the original owner put them in?
