New Holland L shaped double rake hitch

Used one for several years. No complaints at all other than are very wide if you try to pull the whole set up down the road to transport between fields. should always break it down, but sometimes when short on time I wouldn't. It guess it was about 16ft wide with both rakes in the operational positions. Neither of my rakes had front dolly wheels, so the tounges were heavy to try and move back and forth several times in a day if raking multiple fields and doing highway transport between them. I like a v-rake much better now, but if you have two rakes, the hitch let's you rake twice as fast with half the fuel. Two very important things in my world of making hay. I bought mine for $325 from an implement dealer, used it about 10 years, and sold it very quickly when I advertised it for the same price I paid for it.

I built a copy years ago, and am still using it. Does cut the raking time a fuel in half, but leads to a temptation to over use the rake.

As M Nut says, a pain to transport on the road, and heavy to switch the rakes around if you don't have front dollys on them. The small swivel wheel also goes bananas if you go down the road too fast with it.

Width can be a problem if your fields have many obstructions, or narrow gates. If you are re-raking heavy windrows, the hitch on the rakes will sometimes catch a big pile of hay and drag it.

If one of your rakes has a front dolly wheel. Build your own. search the archives for "tandem rake hitch" On 3 24 13 I posted picture of the setup I have built. Much less cumbersome that the factory setup. But only works if one rake has a front dolly wheel.

I don't know if this is an item you a) have purchased b) are thinking of purchasing or c) are thinking of making.
If it is a) or b) consider making a differing modification of this.
We made one which was basically an extending bar mounted to the back of one of the rakes which extended out far enough to rake a double windrow.
Two pins to pull to un-extend it to tow down the road.
Worked great, cost nothing - made from scrap.
Did not seem to stress the rake frame - both were dolly wheel rakes.
If interested I think I have a pic somewhere.
