Wondering where we can still get parts for these old balers other than junkyards. Does anyone know if JD still offers parts? I was also thinking about replacing the chains on the machine, but I was told that replacing chains without changing the sprockets will cause them to wear out faster. Let me know what you think. Thanks

JD has a surprising selection of old parts still in stock, unfortunately, they tend to waaaay over charge for them, which is why they're still sitting on the shelves.

2nd - Not sure what you'd be worried about wearing out - the chain or the gear? Either way - I'd imagine that would take a few decades to become much of a concern.

Guess it depends on how much you use the baler.
But if it's under a couple thousand a year, I don't think I'd worry too much about it, and just change out the chain if it's broken.

you are going to have to check and see,,,, the chains should be no problem, sprockets might be another. How worn are your sprockets??

Go to www.jdparts.com and you can look at the parts catalog. Go a step further, and register on the site with a nearby dealer. Then, you can look at parts pricing, availability, and local dealer price.

go to the largest sprocket. pull the chain away from the sprocket. If it pulls far enough that you can see the tips of a couple teeth clear from the chain looking from the side, your chain is stretched and should be replaced. If the tips of sprocket teeth are pulling over in the direction of travel instead of being pretty much symmetrical, you need to replace sprockets. Loose stretched chain will wear sprockets.

If your are replacing chains make sure to have all the parts like flywheel , feeder forks etc. Blocked as not to change the timing. That little front chain is the one that wears the most.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll have to take a closer look at it this weekend and see how the sprockets are. My dad always told me that if you replace chain and use old sprockets that it will wear on the the sprockets different and wear the new chain out faster because the old was wore the same.

Whatever you decide make sure you use a made in USA chain.Deere sells US chain as well as Drives and Diamond. Do not use junk from China as it will not last.

If you replace the chains before the sprockets start wearing much, you'll only be doing yourself a favor. Wait too long and then the sprockets will be worn and then you will have to replace both the sprockets and the chains.
