oliver spring

Wondering if any of yall know where I
could find one of the compression springs
at. It came off of a early Oliver
plowmaster. Does john Deere or caseih have
something like that?

Couple of suggestions and they are both from past experience plus a bit of education.

Most springs are of similar metallurgy. Strength and rate come from three dimensions. Diameter of wire, Diameter of coil and either overall length or number of coils.

With that knowledge here is the two routes I usually take.

1. Auto parts store/ good hardware store etc. Some of these places have a spring assortment all sorted out and organized in one place. I think even the bigbox stores like Menards have these.

2. A dealership that has a parts man that knows his stock and is willing to look for you.

Nother option I thought of as I was writing this, do you have a AGCO dealer that handled Oliver back in the day. They might be able to help.

Should be doable though. It is a straight spring and not huge so my first try would be the hardware assortment I listed in option 1.

OK thanks. But does it has to have the spring like now or just a plain straight spring. What is it called when the spring goes smaller to bigger and then back to small again. Never had to deal with one of these spring before so I'm one first base with all of this.

I just went the hardware store route on mine. Ended up having to add a couple washers as the spring was a bit too short for everything to work properly. Not OE, but works for the random plowing-for-entertainment mine sees.

Take some bits from yours along, match up the wire thickness.

Measure how long yours was if all the bits are there, or measure the space you need to fill plus a little bit.

Buy something close, and a couple washers or bushings with the wide rim, sometimes called fender washers, that fit over the shaft and bigger than whatever spring size you buy.

Put a washer, the spring, a d a washer on the shaft.

Enjoy using the plow.

Most springs with the same size wire and same length will be about the same strength. For this use, it probably isn't all that critical, would be different for internal engine parts or so, but here - close is pretty good.

Now if you want a show piece with exact replica then I understand, you will want to source a barrel spring of the same dimensions exactly, I get that. But to use and enjoy, close is gona be plenty good enough.
