So would a ford 515 or a 501 sickle bar be better on a 8 n tractor.
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the only difference is that the 515 has a wobble box verses the pitman arm.

They hook up different. All the 515 requires is the stabilizer bracket with the ball under the right fender like the earlier mowers and it requires a swinging drawbar on the back of the tractor and it has to be swung all the way to the right. You are correct about the wobble box on the 515 vs the 501. The 501 had brackets that mounted on the lift arms which you can't hardly find but I know of people that got by without using them. I got rid of a 515 not too long ago. I had it on a Ferguson TO-20.

The 515 is the better mower of the two because it doesn't matter if the cutter bar is mowing perfectly flat, downhill in a ditch, or uphill on a bank. You have to be careful with pitman mowers on getting cutter bar on angles while mowing. Ford did sell a 505 mower that was made by IHC and I'm pretty sure they were a belt drive mower also but I can not comment on how well the work or how easy they are to hook up since I've never owned one, but I know people that have had them. I have a neighbor that still has a 505.

Honestly I liked the mower but it goes back to me saying that you can't turn the sickle fast enough if the mower has the sheaves on it for a tractor with live power. Everyone else said it would work fine but it didn't for me, and if you look in the manual for a 515 Ford recommended changing the sheave on 4 speed non live pto tractors to get the proper speed on the sickle to match up with your ground speed. Maybe I'm wrong...all I can base it on is my experience and what Ford says. But the 515 is a great mower. I traded mine to a friend who runs it behind a tractor with live power. I now use a Dearborn 14-15 and I don't have the same problems that I had when trying to use the 515 behind my TO-20.

Either one will work on your tractor as will a good many other ones made by many companies. The Ford mower tend to be a little easier to work with since they are made to fit the fords. You many find you need the swinging draw bar set up to make them work as they should. I have the owners manual for th 515

Ok thanks. I seen a couple down in ky for sale I might go look at. What all should I look for when I go to get one. Should there be a stabilizer or something that hooks up under the right side of the tractor??? What about the top link or other brackets if any. Sorry dont mean to sound stupid but they look a lil different set up than the Oliver I got here
