Howard Selectalith

My father in law bought my wife a Howard Selectalith PTO
tiller and it's my job to get it to work. It's not seized up, but is
real low on oil, seems to be missing all the guards and has two
grease fittings that don't take grease. What I'd really like to
find is a manual. i called up Howard and they said if a part
breaks I'm SOL. They weren't much help with a manual, I
googled it too, but while I found models that looked similar, I
just found parts manuals, so at least I have an idea of the guts
of the thing. My big concern is the slip clutch sticking and
hitting a rock and then destroying the PTO on my equally old
Farmall 300. What's the best way to test that slip clutch?

I see manuals on e-bay every once in a while. The best way to deal with the slip clutch is to back it off till it slips, then tighten up a little at a time till it only slips when you hit something.

Guy"s machinery. Woodsstock, IL. 815-338-0600. Howard dealer. Has some parts. Should be able to ID your machine

Hi, That tiller is a SELECTATILTH, meaning you can exchange a couple of gears in the back of the box to change the speed of the tiller. My father was a dealer in the 50s. To check the clutch can you not loosen the springs and adjust to your liking? Ed Will

Guys came through with a manual and a parts manual. Turns out the thing is missing the entire wheel assembly on both sides! Should I run it without wheels? It looks like the wheels keep the gearbox level.

A fella was tilling my grandmothers garden with one. {She was allways impatient and wanted me to work it too wet} and he had the j shaped tines instead of the L shaped and i had him do about 50 ' of ear picked corn stalks and it never plugged up!!Cant wait til i win th elottery and can afford one!! lol
