JD Number 4 sickle mower parts source

I just pulled the old john deere Number 4 sickle mower out of the back forty to fix up and paint and notice the knife head and all the knifes are gone grew legs somehow over the years now I am lookin for the knife head would anyone know a good source or if the knife head is still available?

Probably the old standby ball end.Should be
available at many scources.Shoup,abilene,All-
states...Plus there probably 1000s of then hanging
on the sides of farmers sheds or in bone piles.

Thanks I will check out my deere dealer had no idea they would still have the knife head probably very expensive as you say wish I could find one that is hangin on a old farmers barn wall but I think I would need a lot of luck everybody around here sells every bit of metal they can find to the salvage yards or has a crusher come in

Those parts are all the same on the No. 5, No. 8, No. 9, No 11. and I think the newer models as long as they are not a balanced head or a side mount mower. Those mowers are still very desireable for use in my area and they will depending on if painted up and otherwise in top condition will retail for $1,500. And everything you would need is avaible aftermarket including all bearings and gaskets. If it is the what is caller the trailer version instead of the horse drawn version it will have 7-8" whide wheels and those will hit the $2,000 mark. Those parts were probably removed to be used in a newer tractor mower. A dealer I work with would have all the parts you would ever need to get it running and be cheaper than any other place.

I know the older Dain mowers had a different sized ball end. I'm not sure how late this ball was used. I am thinking some of the later mowers used this ball as well. I know the No. 5 used the common sized ball. Mike

Thanks to all who have replied I will try to get around to calling you tomorrow Dean in iowa . now I have another question I took the gearbox apart today was very satisfied with the shape of the gears just a little surface rust on some but I have no idea how to take out the flywheel, flywheel shaft and pinion bevel gear now it seems to me like the pinion bevel gear is threaded onto the flywheel shaft but I don't want to grab the gear with a pipe wrench for fear of messing up my nice gear any suggestions?? thank you

Very first thing is get a parts manual, do not know if they are still avaible for free on Deere's site anymore or not, and figure out exactly what year-model you have. There are different setups due to different years. The man I could get all the parts for it from could about due it in his sleep but he is 50+ mile one way from me and he would need to gnow what gears you have to be able to tell what to do.

I do have a parts manual and as far as I can see it looks like the pinion bevel gear is threaded on the crankshaft I wish I could post a pic of it and as for the year it has no serial number plate so I cant tell what year but it is a number 4

is this what they called the big 4 mower if it is i
have a complete unit for sale, been painted few
years back. i am getting rid of my hay collection
items. hay loader, binder, dump rake and tedder also
need to go.

The way you tell is by looking at the part numbers on the gears and counting teeth in gears and the book will tell you years those parts were used. Also any other part number you can find. And you need the Dealer quality parts manual for that, not the little one in the operators manual. I do not have the operators version but I do have the latest dealer version that they had on their web site and that one has a lot of that information in it.

If you get the book called "Horse Drawn Mowers" by
Lynn Miller, it has tons of pictures and info on
how to restore the Big No. 4 as well as I H number
7 and 9 mowers. It has a chapter on what to look
for when buying a mower for parts or one to
restore. Well worth the purchase price in my humble
opinion.

Where are you located? If within driving distance I know different people that might be interested in the mower. The only thing I do not think they would be interested in is the dump rake. You say binder, grain or corn? They use these items in their daily farming.

southeast iowa northeast mt pleasant ia about 25 miles. binder is grain binder. all are pictured on craigs list under southeast ia farm catergory

UNDERSTAND that a Big #4, and a #4 MAY be different. A Big #4 is a horse mower, and a #4 may be a percuser to a #5 Tractor mower.
