3-18 Semi-Integral Plow

I have been looking for a good, used 3 Btm 18" semi-mounted plow. Don't think Deere ever made one smaller than a 4 Btm. Did IH, Oliver, White or any other reputable manufacturer ever make a 3-18? Where would be a good place to locate a good, serviceable 3-18 plow?

Where are you? I had a beauty. White 508 3x18 semi-mounted. I got it from Wengers in PA. Was very disappointed when I found someone had put new wear parts on it, but the frogs were absolutely shot.(Front point bolt hole was gone)! I took pictures, and Wengers stood behind it. I ended up getting the parts locally.
I know Deere had a 3x16 semi-mount, but don't know about 3x18.

You have it right, JD never made a 3x18 plow.
I'm only aware of that configuration in a white plow. There may have been others, but by the time the 18 inch bottom was in vogue, most guys weren't fooling around with the little 100 hp or less tractors; at least those guys who were serious about moldboard plowing anyway.

I have a White and also an Allis Chalmers in the 3x18 s. I know Case also had them. Pretty sure Oliver and Ford did too.

I had a Kevernland (sp?) 3x18 semi mount. It was a nice working plow. OEM wear parts were big $

If you have troble finding a 3x18 plow could you cut down a larger 4x18 plow to make a 3x18?

Some older semi-mounted plows could be re-assembled with one less bottom. JD #145 was one that could be cut down with only a few different parts: the steering bar; the tail wheel lift rod; and the hitch had to be moved. The operators manual described how to do it.

Maybe. I know you are right...some plows were designed to add or drop a bottom. I heard about a John Deere 1450 5-18 that was cut down to a 3-18. Not sure how they did it, but the picture looked good. I would think that if it were not done right, the line of draft might be screwed up.

Central MN, hadn't thought of selling it, but??? It is in very good shape, not much use on newer wear parts. Was another one listed in west central MN for around $2200 on craigslist a while ago. Don't know if it sold or not.

IH 710/720 can be narrowed down. (or added to) Don"t need to cut the frame off- just remove last bottom, move tail wheel fwd. Frame will not extend beyond gauge wheel if only one bottom is removed. No holes to drill- just unbolt, move, rebolt. Steering arm is drilled for different number of bottoms.

I had an IH 720 5-18, added the frame section to make 6, went back to 5 for awhile when big tractor conked out, then back to 6 bottoms with another tractor.

Where are you located? I'll keep my ears open if you're near by. I saw a nice Case a few weeks back for around $500 I kick myself for not buying it, I just really had no need.....

Just an idea...
If you install dished coulters to your plow, they will handle trash much better. Considering how the 18" bottom pulls harder than narrower bottoms, I'd suggest finding something like an F145 in 16" bottoms and use M&W concave blade coulters. I've never plugged my dad's 4x16" even in heavy corn stalks. The coulters make all the difference!

A 4x16" JD F145H can be cut down to 3x16" fairly easily and the original op's manual even gave instructions on how to accomplish this and account for the change in line of draft.

I've got several F145H 4 bottom (16 & 14") plows if you'd like to talk. I'm located in Southern IL about an hour south from St. Louis, MO.

Thanks for the suggestion. If I buy a Deere plow, I think I will try to stick with a 1450. I believe it will have more trash clearance than a 145H or 145A. How much harder does an 18" plow pull than a 16"?

that's a good question. I'd say that while you cut 10% more with the 18 versus the 16 they might pull 15-20% harder for the same total cutting width.
I'm not sure what you're going to pull the plow with, but that could make all the difference.

I'll be pulling it with a 3020 Diesel. I'm more interested in keeping my speed up, maintaining at least an 8" depth of cut and not plugging in heavy cornstalks than I am in trying to pull a bigger plow in 3rd gear. Maybe I would be better off with a 1450 3-16 with M & W Concave Coulters. Even in heavy soil, I should have plenty of power.

I have a White 348 full mount that adjusts either 16 or 18. I am in central Ohio, and it's for sale for $1,200 if you are interested.

Thanks for your picture and information. I'm more interested in a semi-integral plow...yours appears to be fully mounted. What width of cut is your plow currently set on? About what year is your plow and what is the condition of the wear parts? The front coulter looks like it doesn't match the other two, or is just worn a lot? How hard does it pull? Will a 70 HP John Deere 3020 Diesel pull it 8" deep at 4 1/2 MPH? Does it handle heavy corn stalk residue well without plugging?

I just bought the plow a couple months ago, and have not been able to use it yet. I realized after I got it that for what I'm going to be doing I don't need such a big heavy plow. Your 3020 should pull it fine. I used to plow with a White 508 5 bottom, which is just like the 348 except its a semi mount behind a MM G900 (90 HP). The MM pulled the 5/16 no problem. The wear parts are pretty good, but the front coulter needs replaced. Everyone I have talked to said the White plows are some of the best ever made. This one should do well with corn stalks....I doubt there are many plows that would do better. I think this plow was made in the mid to late 70's. I think this plow is set for 16's now. I have not had a lot of time to go over it and check for sure. Unfortunately it's in a friends barn a few miles away, and due to the weather and other projects I haven't done much with it yet. My email is open if you want more pics, or have additional questions.

Thanks for the information. I agree with you...White Plows have a very good reputation. I am going to pass on your plow. I still want to find a semi-mounted plow, if I can. I have plenty of time, so no reason to get in a hurry. As good as your plow looks, you should have no trouble in selling.

Scout2008 - Do you still have the White plow for sale? If so, I may be interested if you would contact me.... ( chad.lamp ) at ( comcast.net ). Thanks.
