I guess this qualifies as an implement...

Found this ad for the atom log splitter, on youtube. I have an old unicorn splitter, that I paid $5 for at an auction. What I am looking to do is to make a cone, like the atom splitter has, behind the unicorn, that spreads the split wider. Looking for a cone shape, that goes from about 4" at the small end, to about 8" at the wide end. I think I could free hand thread it with a grinder. When I get it together, I have a skid loader mounted auger to attach it to. I have seen bigger cones, from Lasco, but hesitate to ask what just the cone would cost, and whether it would be worth mounting a real big screw, on my little loader. THe Atom splitter costs about $650, IIRR. ANy way here is the video, on the

Thats interesting, being on the end of a post hole digger, so I suppose, being in the seat, being mobile, safer than other set ups we have seen with the unicorn. Towards the end of the video, he picks and carries a shorter log, it looked like it wanted to spin, don't want to be near that LOL !

What concerns me is the constant on/off with the pto, but with longer logs, it does seem apparent, that you split one as needed, then just buck and its done, so with a larger log you may have to split it 3 times, then buck, though cutting broken up wood can be little rough, looks viable for the person who likes this method. Nice to half larger logs, not a fan of these, but I can think of a few large oak logs we have at the other place, halving those would be great before splitting, this would be great for that. I do wonder, place that in the wrong place on a big log, could it get stuck and what does it take to get it out?

My machine is a hyd driven auger. All I have to do is hit the reverse switch, to unscrew it. The one-way PTO is the reason that they didn't sell too many unicorn splitters, I think. I think I found a cone shape, that I can use, truck tire balancing cone, just have to measure the unicorn, to see what size I need. If anyone has any ideas for cone shaped steel parts, I'm still all ears...

Years ago, late 70's early 80's, we tried one that fit directly on the three point, split after cut to length, as a demo test for the company my dad worked for. They were thinking of selling them. Did not work near as good as the hydrolic splitters, got stuck too many times especially in a larger log and had to cut off with the saw and axe (saw as close to cone as could without hitting it then axe rest of the way). Very dangerous in my opinion as the cone rotated all the time - too easy to fall into it out in the woods. With Dave running it off hydrolics and able to reverse direction would atleast help when it gets stuck.

Just dug the old Kubota one out of storage, it went on the lower lift arms of the 3 point, and the cone stuck out the back. Idea was you slid the log along this pipe, and swung it into the screw, and stand back while it was screwing itself into and splitting the log. Rack where the log would hit is pretty bent up, on this one. What I need is a cone shape, that goes from 4" at the narrow end, to maybe 8" at widest. The shaft size on this thing is 1-3/8" Shaft size of the power unit is 2 -9/16".

The film showed them splitting all easily splittable wood. I'd like to see it on sweetgum with knots.

Looks to me like those would be a good tool to have for some situations but wouldn't want it as my only splitter. Using a track-hoe made me think, they have cement busting jack hammer attachments for track-hoes. I wonder how those jack hammers would do on wood with a big splitting wedge?

Hydraulic would be the way to go, I've never used a 2 way pto, never even crossed my mind, but if one was inexpensive, I can see a use for it at times for larger straight grain logs, just halving a big log may save some time and energy. That link you posted shows the capability, lot of this is preference, funny how many ways there are to deal with wood !
