Age of JD 246 Planter

How can I tell the age of a JD 246 planter? Apparently some part numbers are different depending upon year. Do the planters have serial numbers?

Thanks

I believe this planter was built in the late 1950s and the 1960s, probably even marketed in the 1970s. It would have come out after Deere began to offer a true 3-point hitch for their 40 series tractors and later the 420-430. I doubt if it is still serviced (parts maintained) by Deere, but likely you can get chains, maybe sprockets and likely you can get planter plates, which should be widely available because they interchange with many other Deere planters. Deere's larger planters were the best sellers of the era. This would be a good choice if you want a three-point-planter for corn, soybeans, milo, sunflowers.

All the critical parts should still be avaible from Deere as they were used from 1940? to the latest 7000 perhaps the 7100 or 7200 planters that were plate type.

They where first produced in 1953. There where some changes in 1960-61. I believe they where in production into the very late 1960s.

Many parts are still available new for them. The plates are the same as many of the newer plate type planters.

Dean Bartels of Peosta Iowa is a whiz on them. HE could tell you exactly when an where about them. He also has a lot of parts for them. He is on here some times too.

went to jd dealer and couldn't get any parts. everything is discontinued. I have a 246 planter and it needs a lot of parts and work. what to do?

What parts do you need? Most that wear out are in seed boxes and if dealer cannot get them he is not looking.

I am looking for the round plate that goes in the bottom of the fertilize hopper if you are unable to get your planter going and would be interested in getting rid of I would like to purchasing one of them. I have a set that I rebuilt a couple a years ago. Parts are hard to come by. I got fertilize hoppers from Dean Bortiles, but haven't been able to find the rotating plate. One of mine is about eat up with rust. Thanks If I find any parts I will send you a message.

Thanks Tx Jim that is the one I have, mine has a round hole in the bottom. Some have a square hole and they want work. How can I check this out to see if the hole is round or square. Thanks for your reply. I defiantly want it if it is round. Thanks again!
