Dump trailer buying advice.

looking into getting a dump trailer. looking for advice on good brands, also if seems they come in several different weights or specs like lightweight, medium and heavyweight . I live about 2 miles from a quarry and want to be able to get rockdust and gravel. As well as haul mulch, firewood hay etc. Will the electric lifts dump 2 tons of gravel. Thanks for any advice.
 
I have a 6x12 Bri-Mar trailer with a 10K max load capacity, after subtracting the weight of the trailer it leaves me with about 7200 lbs actuall capacity. it will lift 2 tons but they are not fast, but it beats shoveling by hand. get the biggest bed you can afford but don't plan on filling it full of heavy loads like gravel and dirt or you will be shoveling some off till you can get it to lift. a large bed will allow you to haul light bulky stuff like tree limbs and compost easily.
once you get one you will wonder just how you got by without one all these years.
 
We had a Howle way back when; had a 400 bu (24,000#) capacity grain bed on it; 12v-driven hydraulic hoist worked great.
 
I have a 6x10 Homsteader that can easily haul and dump 2.5 tons of gravel. I opted for an over-the-axle bed, which provides greater ease in dumping brush, etc. With tailgate flat, I can also put 3 round bales in it and haul/dump them--they slide out. I found this used one at a trailer dealer.
 
Hey, my dad and I made a dump trailer from an old feed mill frame, just get a hoist from a barge wagon and build a bed we made an 8by8 bed then put on 18 inch sides. It makes a handy trailer for wood, gravel and fill dirt.
 
i have a 7x14 dump trailor 14000 lb axels ,the stone
quarry is twenty minuets away,i try to keep it
around 4 1/2 ton net weight on it .(depends on the
mood the loader operator is in)mine is power up
power down 12 volt system,but after about 4 loads
the battery is pretty much shot.

Your comment about the over-the-axle is valid. Some dump trailers will not raise high enough because the tail hits the ground too soon.

I've seen it firsthand, especially when on uneven terrain.

i bought a doolittle last spring. 14k gvw, 14 ft long. get one with a scissor lift, not twin cylinders. if loaded crooked, you will bend a cylinder. mine came with the tarp, 3 way tailgate, onboard 120v battery charger, and a wireless remote and a corded remote dump controls. also has skid loader ramps stored under the rear. mine is also wired to charge off the trucks elecrical system. anout 7500 out the door. heres a couple pics

I have a 8'x16' 25k big tex dump trailer. It works perfect. I can theoretically load 17 k. That is no where near "full" as far as volume goes. That works out to about 5-6 yards of crushed concrete. It just barely dumped. Hydraulics aren't up to that weight. I now haul about 10-12 k and it works perfect.

Battery would last only 3-4 dumps with small charging wire. I ended up running #2 wires from the battery on the truck to make it last all day and as fast as I can make a run.

Pay attention to dump agle. 45 degree is about right. Anything less and sticky material won't dump. Scissor lift only. Dual cylinders seem to be problematic.

Back into your GCWR of you vehicle and get the biggest volume trailer you van afford.

Gooseneck is far easier to handle than the smaller bumper pull I used before.

Shop for a servicing dealer. That's going to be more important than the brand.

I would look hard at the Big Tex. I own a 20K H&H, and would never recommend another.
