coverboards wing extensions

I have a Ferguson plow, 3x12's it is an older curved beam plow.

It does not have cover boards or wing extensions

To this day I wonder why Ferguson plows were ever let out of the factory without these additions?

Chokes and does not cover well, I would think these additions would have solved the short comings.

At this point I guess I could buy a plow with these options cheaper than buying or trying to find these parts that would fit my old mf62 plow.

Just seems like JD and IH plows had these options as std equipment.

12" isn't very much clearance for trash.Cover boards will only make the plugging worse.Even makes a 16" plow more prone to plugging. The moldboard extentions are only needed if the dirt doesnt completly roll over.Like plowing rootbound sod. When plowing sod or very hard/chunky ground,I remove the c bs as they tend to break under those extreme conditions.

Driving faster can help the wing extensions, dirt rolls over faster.

Dad made some from old car or truck leaf springs, bolted on the top corner of the bottom where a extension would go.

Rarely see them or the cover boards around here on any plow. I agree a cover board would make it more prone to plugging. They do help tick in the trash tho, leave a blacker field.

As mentioned a 12 inch bottom just comes from the factory ready to plug, not much room between bottoms. Good, big, well adjusted coulters help a lot. Not old worn down ones.

The old plows came with the tractor new in 1957 so I hate to just take the middle one off.

I will just keep an eye out for a set of 2x16's they should pull ok and maybe I can drive faster, say first gear high range. Now I have to drive in low range third gear too pull the plows.

Will look for plows with the kick back option as if you hang a stump with these old plows it will give you a thrill.

Thanks for the input.

In 1957 Cover boards were and add on for probably everybody. I was still in high school and the neighbors bought a set for there new 3 bottom John Deere plow. The cover boards were orange and did not come from Deere. In fact when I started with the Oliver dealer in 1960 they were also an add on as they were not available from Oliver yet.
