New Holland 276 baler feed question

I'm having a problem with the feed on a 276 baler. As the left feed tines get close to the chamber the front tine rubs the frame in the area of the left sprocket (the sprocket attached to the feeder gearbox). It seems like it has gotten worse last year. I'm wondering if shimming the sprocket could be the fix for this. Has anybody had this problem? Anything else to look for?

Check chain tension and sprocket shafts [left shaft bearing tapered roller in the gear box]. Chain should not sag when the feeder bar is between the two sprockets. If I remember I think it is 1/2 inch deflection with 50 pounds pull. Could very well need a new chain. Not a bad idea on a 40 year old baler....Ron

67 1550, don't get me wrong, the 276 was one of the finest balers NH ever made. Just maybe time for some new parts. Good luck and keep us posted with what you find....Ron

Thanks again. No doubt that some new parts are in order and a new chain is on the list! Having the chain fail would be pretty ugly.

I just had the feeder bar on my NH276 completely rebulit. a Roller broke and let the feeder bar drop into the chamber...heck of a racket but not much damage. I think there may be room for a shim or 2 under the bar attachment bearing/bushing where it fits onto the drive shaft coming off the chain. But not sure. Mine rubs slightly in the area you mention but mine has a hard wood rub block in place just under the big sprocket. I assumed it was put there by the factory. I'll have to look at a parts diagram to see if the wood block can be replaced?
