8n max # of rows

curious about what the max number of planter rows that an 8n could handle. Sorry for the double post, but I was told to ask it here.

Reason I ask is that there are always more 4 row planters on craigslist than 2 rows and roughly the same price, or atleast a way better per row price.

Neighbor tried to use dads new 490Jd with dry fert in the early 1960's. He got part of the way across the field and got stuck in dry dirt on a level field. Then he could not lift the planter. I had to take the WD45, hook on to the front, pull him to the end of the field. He then unhooked the chain and tried to turn around without raising the planter out of the ground. He didn't get turned around. he was a pig headed old neighbor. I finally got him unhooked and planted the rest of his field for him. NO it will not pull a 4 row planter with full dry fert boxes.
 
Probably pull a plain simple 4 row just fine.Yuo
start adding fert boxs,knives,etc,then you will get
too much for the tractor.Get one with a machanical
lift.
 
My Grandpa pulled a 4 row JD (490?) with his Jubilee
for many years. Had fertilizer too, but not big
tanks like a JD 7000 has. An 8N should pull most 4-
row clutch lift planters.
 
Should have added that the Jubilee has loaded tires. Your 8N will need loaded tires as well, to have enough traction.
 
Could easy enough take 2 rows off the 4 row if you found you couldn't pull it. Tried once to pull a 11 hoe drill with a cultipacker behind with the little ford. Pulled straight OK, but couldn't turn on the end.
 
Like everybody says,depends on the planter. I've got an Allis Chalmers 333 four row and in soft ground it's almost more than my Oliver 1550 wants. I pull that one with the 1850 about all the time.
 
A very simple old style planter with no fertilizer it might pull ok.

It won't have the hyd to lift a heavy 4 row, and it won't have the
power to pull a 4 row with 4 fertilizer openers.

I've pulled a 4 row JD 7000 with dry fertilizer with a New
Holland 1720, which is a 27 hp front wheel assist compact,
with a strong hydraulic pump. I had to drive slow (which
resulted in one of the better corn stands I've had...). It needed
all the power, it needed the 4wd and weight on the tractor in
loose or wet ground, and it needed the 2000#+ hydraulics to
lift the planter. It was a good planting year, not difficult
conditions. My other tractors woulda pulled it better, but didnt
have the hydraulics to lift it. I tried. (Regular planter tractor the
injector pump died....)

I'd say an N would not make it for all 3 reasons. But an older,
wheel lift, no fertilizer setup might go. But it would be tough.

I see a lot of folk making 2, 3, and 4 row 3pt hitch planters out
of the 7000 units. Very spendy, but if the tractor 3pt could lift
them, I'd think they would work?

Hi Cam, I have an 8N and the 309 Ford planter that was made for it. It works great. I have a 490 JD and I will try it out next year. I barrowed a 4 row 7000JD last year and I was able to pull it on level ground but it was all the tractor could do. Then I barrowed a 2 row 7000 and the little Ford did great. Even up hill. The planters I barrowed each had a small motor and hyd. pump on them. I will try the 490 but if it is too much I will use the Farmall H I just bought.
 
I would have to ask why? The 490 is not a heveir planter than the Oliver 402 also a 4 row and fertilizer boxes hold just about the same and we pulled a Oliver 402 for several years with a 1944 model 2N Ford with no problems but we had loaded tires as we also plowed and disked with that tractor.
