New holland 256 rake axles

No, each hub has ratchet/dogs in it. For turning, and keeps it from driving in reverse also. That is, if everything is working properly.
 
I just purchased one and it was not turning smooth. I jacked it
up and the left axle pulled in a reverse direction and the right
pulled in a forward direction. Thought something was messed
up, am I correct
 
Something is not right. The hubs are different left and right, not sure about the dogs(pawls), but I know the springs are different as I just bought some. You need to take them apart and inspect. They are supposed to 'ratchet' when backing up and make a 'click-click' sound. The wheel that is driving going backward is the one that has something wrong, obviously. Does it ratchet when going forward or when rolled forward by hand when jacked up?

There are 'hairpin' like springs in each hub that keep the pawl(dog) in position. They do rust and break.
 
The springs can break and the pawls can wear down and jam/pivot wrong + they get overgreased and don't move right.

New springs and pawls are available at NH dealer. Easy job to replace. Jack rake up, remove drive shaft to rake basket, remove tires and cotter pin on RH wheel and everything comes apart.
 
I just bought an old 256 and am having the same problem. Seems the wheel on the left (looking from the tractor) pulls when moving forward. The right wheel only turns the basket when backing up. So you guys are saying both wheels should pull when going forward?

That is correct. The ratchet mechanism acts as a differential when turning with the rake. The outside wheel has to go faster, so the inside wheel ratchets instead of skidding etc.
