ear corn seems to shell easy

started picking some ear corn yesterday and seems to shell off the cob pretty easy. seed corn dealer said any corn will pick in ear and his company dont have a "specific" hybrid for ear corn. he also said he was comboning some higher moisture corn and it was shelling good. anyone else picking ear corn seem to be shelling more than usual this year? i'm running a 300 deere.
 
I"ve noticed this problem in the past...not just this year. I think it"s because seed corn developers/breeders are selecting for this trait(to shell easily), so that when you have high yields, say 200 bpa, it will shell just as well as if the combine is working in corn yielding 100 bpa. There is so little corn havested now as ear corn (except seed corn) that seed breeders aren"t concerned with it staying on the cob. They want just the opposite.
 
Same problem here. Some of it is the modern corn, but more of it is we have had a mostly dry fall, so the corn is down to 15% in the field, which it normally isn't.
 
Gary, your picker uses the same heads that were used on combines. You shouldn't be getting any more shelling than a combine would. If you can keep the head full it will help cushion the ears as they hit the stripper plates. If you are having to drive slow to pick up down corn you may just have to accept some loss in that kind of condition. Driving slow and letting ears hit the stripper plates directly will cause what you are experiencing. Mike
 
thanks for all the info. figured it had some to do with what everyone said, and yes i'm driving kinda slow. will try speeding up and see if that helps.
 
Another thing that will help on the shelling issue is to time the gathering chains so the lugs are directly across from one another. When the lugs are offset the lugs will sometime beat on the ear as they try to move the ear to the auger. Placing the lugs together will allow the ear to be carried more positively to the auger which will lower the tendency to shell. Mike
 
When corn was being picked in the past, the moisture was higher because it would keep at higher moisture. With the corn being dryer it will shell worse I've found
