NH 499 Drawbar Extension

Just took delivery of a NH 499 mower-conditioner and while reading thru the Operator"s Manual, it references a drawbar extension. By the looks of it, this extension bolts onto the tractor"s drawbar and then bolts onto the swivel ball of the mower itself. I suspect it probably adds 12 inches or so of length.

That said, for those who use a 499, do any of you use the extension or do you simply direct connect the mower to the tractor"s drawbar with a 1 inch pin? Just trying to determine if I need to find and/or make this extension.

Thanks.

I have a 499(and have owned 2 Hesston Hydroswings in the past).I use a (homemade) drawbar extention.Dont really know how long...I simply have it long enough to keep the hoses straight while operating.I supposed it's 12-14 ".I have been thinking of building a speacial long dedicated drawbar to take the place of the 'extention. The bolts work loose,no matter how tight,or what kind of 'keeper' I use.Never lost the swather yet but it tends to get 'floppy'.I keep close watch on it.Good luck.If you need more info, please ask,or call.Steve

The extension adds 8" to your tractor's drawbar length. It will increase the turn angle by moving the tongue pivot point away from the tractor rear axle center line allowing a tighter turn before the rear tractor tire contacts the haybine tongue.
