Are their any difference between these two besides age? I picked up this 27 last weekend for a little more than scrap, runs smooth and seems to be ok.

I want to say that the 27 has a 54 inch diameter fan versus 56 inch for the 28. The gearing for the Whirl-a-feed may be heavier on the 28. I was at a sale down by Arcade a couple of years ago and I could have bought a decent 28 for scrap as the paint was just not that nice but the metal was straight with no holes.

I had a 27 for a couple decades, did sort of ok on haylage at 70 feet, but couldn"t handle 90 feet when we raised the Harvestore. Went to an IH 600....excellent! Only major repair on the NH was replacing the angle gears that drive the spinner. 27 was 540 rpm.....is the 28 1000 rpm? I"d stay away from that. Guys figured more speed was the answer, but torque at 540 works better.

Thanks guys for the replies,
You have me curious about the diameter of the fan so I looked at the New Holland online parts book and it shows the same part no. for both the 27 & 28. Now I'm going to the farm to measure what it actually is, as I assumed it was a 56" when I bought it.

The 28 was a 540 RPM machine. The 30 was 1000 RPM and you are right the extra speed was no help. A very nice 30 does not bring much at an auction.
