IH 205 combine

I searched the archives a few ways for info on the IH 205 combine and found nothing. Can anyone tell me about their combine? Oats or soybeans and the head; corn head - width; how many rows, etc. Plus and minus comments. Was there a sequence of this combine - series? Different size engines and fuel type available? Call me curious. Thanks in advance.

I worked for a farmer that had a 205. It was powered by a 221 gasoline engine. The same engine that was in the 460 tractor. He only had the small grain head, which I think was a 10 foot head. The 205 worked good on hillsides, with the saddle tanks. The 203 which was built before the 205 was about the same machine with a 4 cylinder engine.

I have a 205 combine that I have used for about 15 years until I got a JD 4420 last year. My 205 has a 10 ft grain head. I believe you could also get a 13 ft. I think it could also be equipped with a 2 row wide or 3 row narrow corn head. Neighbor had a 2 row corn head for his but it took a whole day to swap heads. You have to change the entire feeder house. It replaced the IH 203 with the major difference being the 221 CI 460 gas engine. Mine has a cab, PS, scour clean, and crop saver reel. I have both operator and parts manual. I used it for about 30 acres wheat and oats each year. I still have it but would condsider selling it as I have not used it for 2 years. Send me an email if you have more questions that I might be able to answer. I live in NE WI. Al

Al, I tried to send you a PM using the modern view tonight but seems I am not registered there. I will try again tomorrow. But my email is open if you want to send me an email through this forum. Or send me another response with your email open and I will respond. Al

Was reading the forum tonight on IH 205 combines and came across your pictures and comments. Question...Can a guy still get a 2 row corn head for a 205 combine? If so, what number of corn head? Will a 274 head fit? I have a small acreage in NW Iowa and was thinking about a 615 until I found out about the 205. Looks to me that the 205 would be just the right size for my small operation. Please respond. Thanks.

Chad, I believe it will be difficut to find a two row corn head for a 205. I believe those heads only fit the 203 and 205 combines. They are not quick tach as you have to remove the entire feeder house. Neighbor bought a parts combine just for the corn head. He only used it one year and then traded it for a JD 4400. He told me it took him almost a whole day to change heads. If I were you, I think I would look for a 615 or 715 with the quick tach feeder house. Then you can use newer corn and grain heads. The 205 works good for oats & wheat but I have been told they like to break straw walker crankshafts. I broke one in 2005 but was able to find a NOS shaft. Other than that I had no other trouble with mine in the 15+ years I used it for 35 acres of wheat & oats each year. I can look in my operators manual tomorrow and see if it might indicate what corn head numbers can be used. Al
