How to tell if wobble box bearing are bad on NH Haybine

Hello List,
I have a New Holland 467 haybine. It is in good working order and I mowed with it a few times this year - my first year using this machine. Anyhow, I'm beginning to work on it and get it ready again for next year. I've heard about replacing wobble bearings. How do I know if the bearings are bad? What else should I look for around the wobble box? Already replaced the cutter bar bushing and bolt after reading previous posts on here. Thanks guys.

Nate

The only way to inspect the bearings(that I know of) is to take the gearbox apart and physicly/visually inspect them.Grab ahold of the input/output shafts and shake them to feel any play.If the bearings were going bad,I would think the grease seals would be affected and the thing would be leaking.

If the wobble box bearing goes bad it will hammer when mowing. I have a 1971 479 NH and the bearing lasted till three years ago. If you have used it and it don't hammer, I wouldn't change it. Just grease it a lot.

NEKS is right Tell by the sound. If it really clatters it needs rebuilt cost you near 500 parts and labor at dealer.

You will know you have bad bearings when your wobble box grenades on you. They won't last long with any play whatsoever. Something to keep a close eye on because the parts can be expensive. Mine blew up last year on my 478 and by the looks of it, it wasn't the first time.

Thanks guys,

I used the mower for 3 cuttings and had no noise described above. Sounds like I'm good, but just for curiosity sake, how hard is it to rebuild?

Nathan, just so you know, once you hear it hammering it's too late. Between the noise of the tractor and the noise of the mower itself, I didn't hear anything until it already came apart. As far as rebuilding one, I don't know about a 467, mine is a 478. I had to have the end of the outer spindle welded up and turned down and new threads cut for the nut. I have a manual that goes through the disassembly and reassembly in order. The proper preload on all bearings is critical.
