NH-488.clogging up

my 488 started clogging up today the grass getting stuck in the knife guards in front of the blades real bad had to stop lots of time to clean it out

What where the cutting conditions??? If it was wet low, where the sickle cuts, then you will have plugging issues. If the grass is real short and FINE it can cause cutting issues if your sickle and guards are worn. Going too fast can cause the sickle to clog as well. Some types of grass are just hard to mow with a sickle cutting system.

So we need a little more information. Wet or dry? Hay thick,thin or short? How fast your trying to go?? What kind of grass/hay?

Usually a NH 488 with a good sharp sickle and square guards will mow pretty well.

How worn are the guards? Is the gap much more than 3/16"?

If you have the regular guards on, not stub guards but the long pointed ones, and the grass is wet and fine like in 2nd or 3rd cut this time of year then about all you can do is wait a few days for the ground to dry some. I fight that fight every year.

advice, pull the knife, clean out the grass below in the knife groove. Make sure the hold down clips are snug to the knife to keep the gap small. Worked well for me, after I learned to do it. Takes about 1 hour.
