Homemade Net Wrap

We have a john deere 510 baler that is in great shape. New bearings last year, I baled about 250 bales this year and it did a great job, but I want net wrap. The funds aren"t really here this year for me to buy a different baler, so heres my question. I know everyone is gonna say it cant be done, but I think im gonna try. Can you retrofit a previously twine only baler to net wrap? I want to get it into the shop and compare to my neighbors two balers and see if it is feasible. The reason I don"t like the twine is that the twine seems to come apart when moving the bales and that they weather way worse than a net wrap bale. Plus, it takes a lot time to wrap a bale with adequate time. Anyone had a similar project? Did it work?

I've seen netwrap shop installed on a JD 530 rd baler but I think it would be impractical to try such a feat on a 510. Take out a loan using your wife & kids as collateral and get you a 530 or better yet a 535. You be so happy that you upgraded you'll even pay the mortgage on the WIFEY  Netwrap requires a monitor & wiring harness to control operation which a 510 LACKS. 530/535 and later balers are LIGHT YEARS ahead of a 510.

lol I'm only 20 sir, I don't think they'll take my girlfriend as collateral. Im just starting out. No kids for me. We got a great full service shop I think if its possible to do after looking at the other balers im gonna give er a try.

Gonna have a hard time feeding net in on top of the lower belts that are going the wrong way.

Move on to a later baler.

Do like the others have said. Get a newer baler. I have no experience on anything before a 430 and 530. If you have the same kind of luck that I have heard about others having on the 510 then you will wish you had gotten a newer baler. Around here they don't have a good reputation at all. I would say getting parts could be a bit of a problem at times on that 510 baler too.

I have to agree with Tx Jim. Upgrade... if you can get anyone to buy that 510. I have baled with both and one season with a 510 was enough for me. between breaking bottom rollers in half and bearings going out and starting fires, I had had enough. Bought a later model 535 last year in great shape without netwrap for 5k... I understand your problem with the bales coming apart... and have dealt with it. I still twine tie with the 535 and I don't have that problem anymore. The bales from the 535 are more evenly filled and packed that you wont have the rounded off bales that are soft on the outside edges and allow the twines to come off...

You're gonna have to lose the girlfriend anyway, when you get done you will be married to that 510 for a long time.

You came here for advise; pay attention to what the experts have told you. Get something more modern.

Sounds like you have made up your mind to ruin a now working baler. I know about tight funds so lets compromise and just use plastic twine. That 510 can get you by as it is. They are finicky and lightly built. We bought one new and it was more worn out after 6,000 bales than the Vermeer we traded for and put 30,000 bales through. Biggest issue why your idea won't work is compression roll in front and floor belts instead of a roller. Good luck

The rear door is totally wrong for a JD 510 baler to put mesh wrap on. You can find GOOD JD 535s with mesh wrap for less than you would pay to put mesh wrap on a JD 510 baler.

Like Roger stated. The feed belt on the bottom is going to make getting the mesh on the bottom of the bale just about impossible.

If you want to spend a lot of money and effort you can make anything fit anything with enough messing around. Then after you are done it would have a baler that would not be worth a fraction of what you have in the JD 510.
