I ran across a 1036 wagon tonight.I can buy it for $6000.Its in a lot better shape than my old 1032.I dont have the money, the guy might deal/trade/'finance'.I wont be gaining any capacity, only a 10-15 year update and a much less 'used' machine. My old wagon works fine,it needs quite a bit of work.......Thoughts? Steve

The owner here doesn't want to sell Hers yet???
Understand about the Money. I am to tired to run a wagon that I have to get off the tractor all the time. Also getting more tired of repairing all the time. We have talked about that before. Good luck to you my friend.

Steve, the way I figger it, if you use it for ten years, it will only cost $600 per year. Now, if it's newer, and less trouble, it may pay you back in parts, much less time and agrivation. Plus, it may be faster and easier to use. Then, you depreciate for 7 years, and it only costs $1800, or $180 per year. And, you sell or trade your old machine, and it costs even less. I know you're up tight for cash, but there are those times that something may make some sense....

If that thing is only two bales wide, and a pull type, for that price, he could keep it. I bought a 1047 back in 89 for $7800. I just looked on the web and found a two wide at Western Implement Co. in Grand Junction for $17,500. Could be I am not looking at the right machine but I wouldn't pay that kind of price for a used one.

Some questions to ask yourself:

What would it take to fix yours?

What would you get if you upgraded, and sold yours?

What needs repair on the new one?

As you said, you would not gain any productivity.

I don't know your operation or your location. In the mid-west hay is very time sensitive crop. Reliable equipment is a must to put up hay before the weather turns against you and damages the crop.

If break downs on your old wagon start to cost you some crop loss, then a more reliable machine might be justified by reduced crop loss, even if it only has the same capacity as the old machine.

If your old wagon requires a lot of maintenance in the off-season, but it is always reliable enough when you need it. Then reduced maintenance and repair costs would be have to be high to justify the newer machine.
