c.v. joints

The cv joint on a br780 has had a very slight knock for a few years now. Universals are good. It does have lots of hours. 1410 Disc mower just started to have a very slight vibration and minor knock, seems to be worse when turning. Universals feel good. Do these cv joints just wear out with use? Is it cheaper to replace whole shaft or tractor half?

On a CV joint you need to look at the ball and socket that keep the two halves centered. When that ball and socket gets worn then they are no longer working correctly. The universals will oscillate and cause vibration. On some CV joints the ball and socket are repairable. On some they are not. A new CV drive line will not be cheap. They are high priced.

If only the socket is worn and the ball is not elongated you can get a machine shop to fill and mill a new socket. If the ball needs replacing you can get an equivalent sized ball bearing, heat it cherry red and pack it in a 5 gallon bucket of lime until it cools enough to handle, may take 48 hours, then you can weld the ball bearing in place and it will stay. I have bought more than one piece of equipment at auction solely for the CV joints, a new one of the size required for a round baler or big mower can easily cost $1,000.

A&I has the whole shaft for under $1000.00.Friend replaced complete unit in his 780 this spring. Front half from NH is almost $1400.00.
I'm not a fan of after market but you really can't tell the difference. They've probably made 1000 bales with it with no problems.
Good Luck.
