ford 515 mower

I cut and bale for myself, sell a few to cover twine, fuel, and parts. Enjoy making it all work myself therefore am into equipment cheap and see a breakeven point vs buying hay next year (mower, rake, and baler had an initial cost of $1050, tractors would have been here anyway). Thinking about upgrades for next year, winter project and focused on the mower. One problem with the mower is a mixture of guards and some with dull ledgers. I have decent relationship between the sections and the ledgers now but some could be better and believe the problem to be the different guards down the bar. I know about adjusting them but some are not malleable, don't move no matter the force applied.

Saw a Ford sickle for sale one time that had all the guards changed to the double point guards like on a New Holland machine. Anybody ever done this? Any insights or tips. I have the knife bolted, high arch clips, and good wear plates. When I adjusts the hold downs to close the various gaps the knife starts to bind. Believe I need a set of guards that match. Thanks for any tips.

You need all the guards to be the same height. I do not think the double guards cut as well as a good single guard with a good ledger plate. With good ledger plates and a under serrated section they will cut as good at they ever could.

The biggest draw back to the double type guard is that they do not have a ledger/wear plate. So the bottom of the slot wears and you keep adjusting the sickle down to it. Then you break a guard and the replacement is not worn. So now you have a taller guard in the mix. You have to allow the sickle to ride the high guard. So then the rest are too loose.

I have been using the double guards for nearly 30 years. When they get worn down, change them out. If you put any value in your own labor, you can't change ledger plates for the price of new guards. Get the good double hardened ones. Cost about $14/per set. Unless you are mowing a couple thousand acres a year, they should last quite a while.

I switched to the doubles two years ago on my 501. since they don"t adjust, it made me notice that my bar was bent. placed it on 4x4"s and drove over to straighten. so check bar for straightness. actually cuts pretty decent.
