IH Cyclo 800 - flaking fiberglass

Have most of the parts to get this up and going now. I have 8 insecticide boxes and 4 dry fertilizer which are fiberglass. They are weathered and the glass is shedding. Itches if it gets in the skin and I can see it shedding into the air if I stand upwind and knock on the boxes. I have NOT exposed myself to it so please, no dire warnings to that effect...I know not to breath it in and why.

My question is about stabilizing the material so it is less hazardous. A couple ideas come to mind. One is to paint them and, hopefully, cover the fiberglass so that the fibers do not shed. The second idea was to use the epoxy resin boat builders use to waterproof boats. I am thinking it is normally applied over fiberglass fabric (?). I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on these matters? Don't suppose they made poly replacements for these at any point?

Fiberglass resin would work just fine. I"d suggest a quick powerwash to remove any really loose surface material and then go at it. As long as the surface is intact w/o cracks or delaminations then a thin coating of resin should seal everything just fine w/o any additional cloth.

Go to an auto supply and get some fibreglass resin and hardener. Sand the hoppers to remove any remaining glaze and clean off the residue. Mix the resin and hardnener and paint on a new top coat. Don't mix anymore product that you can apply in 5 minutes cause it starts to gel in 7 or 8 minutes in the summer. Epoxy is more expensive and is more for heavy duty stuff such as building parts and mounts. Good luck. It is kind of a trial and error til you get the right amount mixed. Follow the directions for the hardner....Ron

Good ideas, thanks! I don't want people around these things getting glass splinters and breathing same in. I'll look at both and see which will be quickest and easiest and go from there. $$$ isn't much of an issue but time is definitely a problem with the rains coming every other day all summer.
