Swather for winrowing small grains

Looking for equipment options to use for winrowing small grains prior to combining. Would be cutting max of 30 to 40 acres per year. What makes/models of swathers without a conditioner or after removal of the conditioner would be recommended? Any pull-behind models that would be suitable? Older models would be fine and aid in keeping costs down.

I'll second the vote for a Versatile 400. I've only run mine one season, but it worked very well. I had a JD 800 before that, and spent WAY too much time working on it. Green parts are expensive, too. But it will depend on what you can find in your area, and maybe what dealers you have for parts support. I found both the Versatile and JD on craigslist, although you could also check places like farmers2farmers.com, fastline.com or ironsearch.com.
IH 400's seemed to be pretty good, although I've never run one. MacDon makes good windrowers...if you could find one with a draper head rather than an auger head, that would be a good one.

these are what I use made by Hesston to Case specs these are very economical units and cut very well I cut over 100 acres with this one this year of grain for hay

That looks almost like the Hesston 500 we used to have, except with 14" auger head. Of all the equipment on the farm, that and the Hahn Hi-Boy are the ones I miss the least.

sorry you had bad memories from the Hesston, we sold a LOT of these back in the "day" still some left running today around here not bad for 45 year old plus year old machines in my book

We have a #36 Massey Ferguson that my dad bought new in early 70's. Still use it for swathing oats, and it's very handy for mowing grass around the farm where maneuvering a tractor and haybine is too difficult. Last week I cut 4 acres of oats with it, that I'm combining now. It has a Chrysler slant 6 motor and is belt driven. It has a conditioner, but we don't have it under the machine usually, since it doesn't do much with the two rubber rollers.
