Farendloose drumower update

Went out to mow yesterday. I put a new belt on and checked all the bearings. Looked good, so I fired it up in the yard. It ran smooth and true. no wobble in any of shafts or pulleys. Let it run for half an hour before I trusted it enough to take to the field. Mowed ten minutes and it threw the belt. Put it back on and it threw the belt off before I sat down on the seat. Did that a few more times as I watched to see where it comes off. Finally went home for lunch. When I got back I put the belt on and mowed for 3 hours straight with NO problems. I hadn't changed a thing! Then it popped off twice. Then the belt broke. I'm thinking its just laughing at me. The belt was not really tight as I could roll it back on when it came off. At a loss as to what would cause it to throw the belt of all those times, then run great for 3 hours, then eventually snap the loose belt.

I have never used a drum mower, so Im just guessing here. Figure out a way to safely bounce the mower up and down while running it, or have someone follow you over a rough part of the field. It seems to me the belt is probably coming off when some sort of a fairly specific impact affects the mower, throwing something off balance or moving one of the pulleys slightly out of line. Maybe the mower isnt floating freely enough, contacting the ground a bit? Like I said..just a guess..

John, if it"s like my MINOSagri, it is designed to slide on the ground. Mine has two plates (disks) under the cutting disks, mounted on bearings, designed to slide on the ground, independent of the rotating cutting disks. See the link below.

I don"t know what is eating his belts = mine is a different manufacturer, has 4 (count them), drive belts - B-122 or the metric equivalent. Only problem I"ve had is that belts are completely enclosed (not open like this illustration) and as the belt tightener did it"s job, the pulley and back sides of the belts started rubbing on the shield/housing.

I"m very interested in this man"s problem, as I am new to drum mowers this season. Man, has it revolutionized my hay cutting operation. No clogging. No breaking of guards, every time I hit a mole hill. Eats whatever I have to cut, looks for more. Literally can cut as fast as I want to drive. Change of blades costs me $10, and ten minutes.

Corona - Please post some pictures or a link to your particular brand. I can't find any thing on the internet on what your mower looks like. I can't picture what's going wrong - mine has 4 belts in parallel, and it would be pretty hard for them to get out of allignment.

It is/was made in Denmark. Looks a lot like the one in the link. However, the horizontal shaft that is belt driven from PTO drives the drums via the belt in question. The belt starts on the vertical pulley attached to the horizontal shaft. It goes to the tensioner pulley that is at a 45 degree angle. From there the belt goes to the two drums. Sorry no pictures. I"m not that computer smart yet.

That's what I was afraid of, the belt is pulleyed all over the place, including changing angles... Mine is gear/shaft driven, v-belts are straight pulley to pulley. Only suggestion I have comes from my experience with a JD 140 garden tractor that I was using to actually mow off hayfields. Our JD deler had closed, and I was getting belts from whatever vendors I could. None of them lasted long - usually broke the internal belts, and only lasted a little time before turning over, etc. breaking... One time I was near a JD dealer, got a for real JD belt. Held up very well, lasted a long time, actually cheaper than the off brand ones, even the HD ones. Donno where to find a extreme HD belt for yours. Good luck - keep us informed. I just got a drum mower this season, am still on the steep portion of the learning curve.
