I have an old steel wheeled IH 2 bottom rope trip plow, and every time I pull the trip rope to raise the plow the big wheel locks up and skids, can someone tell me what is wrong

after you look in there, if you don"t find anything, ck the tension on the assist springs, if they are missing or way too loose, the wheel will skid because of the excess lifting effort required to raise the plow.

The first thing to do when acquiring ANY brand of rope trip plow is to rempve the land wheel, then remove the entire hub assembly and clean out the 50 year accumulation of hard, dried grease as well as the hard packed dirt that is hiding in there. You may find some broken parts in there, but usually it is just the dirt and hard grease that is causing ALL the problems.

Jack it up and see if it will work when you spin the wheel. I have had this happen before in my case the spring tension was too tight.. also IH plows do not have serial numbers. More than likely you are looking at a part number.

Seen more then one where a person has put bolts in the hold in the wheel so as to work as lugs for better traction. O have a JD plow 2-12 like that and they where there when I got it and it works very good that way

The replies are on the right track. If the nuts are not rusted too much on the rods sticking out of the lifting springs, tighten them up some. Those springs have 2 jobs; assist in lifting and assist in lowering the plow. Turn the nuts until you eliminate wheel skid. Also, the old grease in that trip hub will be hard as steel, get that out, then check the spring and give it a shot of oil. Then a couple shots of new grease to the handle wear areas and you should be good to plow.

Theere are 2 springs, and 2 dogs. IF the springs aren"t stiff enough to make those dogs kinda hard to slip back into the geared or tooted wheel hub, there too week. As was said, clean the hub out of old grease and regrease
