NH 273 Baler springs for forks

I need the springs that go on the NH273 baler forks that move the hay to the plunger. They keep tension on them because currently they are missing and the forks are riding up on the hay on the backstroke. Does any of you know the part number? Thanks.

Ok got the part number from Messicks. Baler currently is packing with straw on the right side of the baler becuase of the fingers flopping up when sliding to the right.

Wait a minute... Aren"t those forks made to swivel upward on the backstroke, ride up over the hay, then drop into the hay as they move back to the left? That"s the way they work on my NH 268. I have replaced several of the springs over the years, they only last a short time... And baler seems to work the same whether the springs are there or not. Right now, I"m missing 4 of 6. No apparent problem.

Ray, this is baling behind a rotary combine in straw, large windrow, chopped straw. Is it the straw is too fine maybe that is causing the plugging. Just seems the baler isnt keeping up and cant handle it. Maybe take half windrow?

How is the baler going to handle chopped up straw in a large windrow???? Your NH 273 is not a very large capacity baler. The fine chopped straw feeds in tough. So you add in the big windrow and with the small capacity baler an you will have trouble unless your tractor has a real slow low gear.

The feeder teeth you see will usually work even with out the little springs on them. The trouble is the shot cut straw. The fingers pull through the fine straw as there is nothing much to hold the straw together as the fingers pass through it.

Also the fingers are supposed to ride up over the straw/hay on the back stroke. Then on the forward stroke they swing down and spear the material and move it into the bale chamber. I bet that if you try the baler in hay it will work fine.

Straw is harder to bale. Chopped up straw is VERY hard to bale. Sometimes next to impossible to bale.

I had a NH 273 years ago and the little springs where broken half the time as they did not last very long. It did not make much difference in how it baled.

I think your problem is the material more so than the baler.

I have baled rotary straw with a 273 and had no problems at all. Rule #1 Don't crowd it. It will happily punch out bales all day if you feed it right. If you hear sheet metal banging you are crowding it. Rule #2 make sure that hinged triangle piece on the outside end of the feeder is there and not binding. It keeps straw from getting in and packing on the very end of the feeder chamber where the forks can't get a bite on it. Rule #3 Double check all your adjustments on the feeder. You may need to change the fork penetration into the bale chamber to make it work. Also this applies to all NH balers with the feeder forks: when your left string/wire side (from tractor seat) is light feed the windrow on the chamber side of the pickup. It may not seem like much but it will make a real difference.
