NH 271 Tinebar sprocket too loose?

I checked the tinebar on the NH 271 I"ve been working on and I have a question. Is it normal for the tine bar, chain, and gears to move when the baler is not running? I can push the forks in the direction of the bale chamber and there is no resistance for a few inches.

When the sprockets turn, the other shaft coming out of the gearbox and the chain for the knotters turn. Is that "freeplay" normal?

Thanks,

Warren

When I have turned any baler over by hand, in one direction it goes for about two turns before the pick-up moves. In the other direction it is immediate.

just to be clear I"m talking about pushing on the tinebar/ feeder forks towards the bale chamber from the back side seems like it moves to freely/easily.

On my 282 I don't think I can move the tinebar by pushing on it, unless shear bolt on main drive is broken, have sometimes done that to get bolt hub in right position. It sounds like to me you have a problem in the gearbox.

Our tried and true 271 bales just fine- I could push the tine bar on that but not as far. wondering if it might be the chain tension not holding it tight enough

Yes, I understand that you were talking about pushing on the tine bar. I wanted to point out my experience in them moving independently at least in one direction.

Ok, I'm with you there, the other direction it stops right away. I'm wondering what stops it from going the other way, if it is the clutch from the pto? Doesn't really matter I just want to know what is normal.

As long as I'm going through this machine I want to fix/adjust what I find. The axel that drives the knotters etc. turns in sync with the axel for the timebar so I don't think anything is broken, but I am going to drain and refill the gearbox tomorrow. If there is a problem I'm thinking some metal will show up in the fluid.

Any other ideas?

thanks,

Warren

Check your plunger head for bearings, play, clearance, and sharpness of knife. If you are "going through it" you want to make sure that it is good.
