#8 IH 2 bottom plow

Why is it when a plow has steel wheels the land wheel is bigger than the furrow wheel and when a plow has rubber tires they are the same size? thanks, Mark.

The land wheel is larger so that full adjustment can be realized, whether you are making that first pass in fresh ground or making the second pass with one wheel in the furrow. Rubber tired plows ARE made the same way if they came from the factory that way. I've seen many #8 plows on "cut down" steel wheels with rubber tires that used the same exact rim and tire size on both the furrow wheel and the land wheel, but that is NOT the correct way to do it.

The land wheel is not always bigger on stel and sometimes it is bigger on rubber. Usually the larger heavier plows have the bigger wheel and it is to give more grip to raise the clutch lift plow, very few hydrolick plows were built on steel. If they have the same size rim on both wheels chances are the land wheel would be supposed to have like a 7:60 x 15 tire while the furrow wheel should have a 6:70 x 15. Now the lighter weight and smaller bottom may have the same on both sides. Think the difference between the genious on 2-16" or the wonder on 2-12" and you will see the bigger plow takes more power to lift the larger bottom out of the ground. Same thing with the Deere No. 52 or the No. 4B. The 52 had a 28 in lift wheel and the 4B had a 32 in lift wheel but both had a 28" furrow wheel.

A larger diamiter wheel give more mechanical advantage. Like using a lower gear to draw a bigger load.
