pull type combine

looking at a pull type combine, john deere 40. what corn head can i use for narrow rows? or do i need to look for a different combine.

Deere didn't make a 40 pull-type, only an SP. It's either a 42 or a 30. 42 was the pull-type version of the 40 and could use a 205 corn head but that was only for wide rows. 30 was the last of the straight-through machines and had no provision for a corn head.

so can one put a narrow row head on a 42? any ideas?

I'm thinking that there isn't a narrow head to put on a 42.

No. Only the 205 2-row wide head fits a 42.
