two row pull type corn picker

how difficult will it be to pick corn with a two row wide pull type corn picker in narrow row corn? my rows are at 32"(planter came that way) and i have heard of some guys picking narrow rows with wide equipment. i dont have a picker as of yet but wide row pickers are cheaper then narrow row. i know i can't use a mounted (thanks to those on here that told me why) and i am looking for a sheller, but found a new idea 324 with a sheller unit but a 324 is for wide rows. so, thus my issue.

I haven't done it, but it is difficult going from what I hear.

The 2 extra inches - 30 is the common spacing for narrow row - might help you some.....

You won't just be spreading the rows out trying to get them in the snapping rolls, you'll likely run over the next row too.

That single row is what you need and then you still have to watch the width from the snapping rolls to the outside edge of the picker as on some models that might be enough that it would ruin by either running down the row next to it or by breaking the stalks off. And corn if it gets brittle then being just 2" off the row will start breaking stalks.

I'm going to buck the crowd and say it's no big deal picking 32" rows with a two row 38" picker AS LONG AS THE CORN IS STANDING WELL.

The two row narrow model 325 spacing was 32 inches. The three row narrow was 30 inches. I would suggest a single row but don't think shellers were made to fit a single row. No doubt one could mate a 314 sheller with some fabrication. If the corn stalks were brittle a wide row wouldn't work very well. But for only 4 acres I would give it a try if unable to locate a narrow two row machine. If going to beans next year likely would need a herbicide to kill the volunteer corn or plan on walking them with a weed hook/hoe.

Its not easy; but can be done. If You buy a 325, It will be already be set for 32" rows. They are made to work 28" - 36". The 324 is set at 40"'s. 36" - 44" rows. That means You will be 8"'s off center. Double whats intended. Worse yet; the outside of a 324 will sit closer to the passing row outside. It will be much harder to keep from knocking over the next pass row, sideways; which in turn weakens the stalk which will have to be pushed back over the other direction when You come back around for it! If its brittle enough it may simply fall over flat.
