IH 430 Knot.

My IH 430 will tie bales with sisal and will miss a bale sometimes on the one side. No big deal. When I pick the bales up to load 99 percent are tight but sometimes one side stays tight and the other will pull apart. There is a knot on one end and nothing on the other. Any Ideas?

If the knot is in the twine over the bale, check the operation of the twine fingers. Twine holder tension may be too tight. If the knot is in the needle twine increase the tension on the twine holder. Hope this helps. Also make sure your twine cutter knives are sharp.

When my 46 does that the twine has backed away far enough the fingers can't reach the twine and it ties an over hand knot which is only on the end as you describe. I don't know if your knotter is different from mine but on mine there are 4 springs that work the hay retainers. Once in a while it will loose a spring and I have the problem you describe.

How do the knots look on that side when they are holding? Is the characteristic two bow knot of about 1/2 inch present? I would check twine tension in the twine box and properly threaded sequence. Additionally, I would check the spring tensions on the bill hook and the twine disk retainer.

Thanks for all of the advice. Both knots look good on the good bales and also on the bales that break when I reach to pick them up. When they do break the knot stays on the end of the bale string that would be towards the knotter. I'll sharpen my knives. I did notice that on the problem side the hay dog spring is loose because of one ring of the spring is broke off. I'll replace that. I might try poly after that just on one side. I noticed my neighbors bales have one green twine and one orange. I'll have to get nosey and ask why.
