Kuhn GMD700 Disc Mower

Okay, this may be stupid, but the Kuhn 700 has a cut range of 1" to 2" and I cut my Coastal 2-1/2 to 3" depending on the conditions.

I ordered a set of high lift shoes (two of them) for the cutter and they have a range of 2" to 3-1/2".

Now, here is the question. Should one go on each end of the cutter bar, or should I space them in some?

My first guess at each end, but then I have to wonder if that causes the center of the bar to constantly flex and lead to gear wear or cutter bar cracking?

Opinions?

I'm not overly familiar with the 700... but on the older models you have an inner shoe that can be raised quite high and the rest of the half moon shoes all need to be equal height. I don't recall if there was a high lift available or not. I'd suggest looking in the ops manual or the parts book and see what's listed. Personally I think for the height you want simply rolling the top link out a bit would get you there... as long as it doesn't make the outer rear end of the bar drag and wear.

Kuhn & JD only call for 2 of the high lift skid shoes. They also state that you should not roll the bar up past level or horizontal of severe wear will occur. Pretty weird.

If that's all they call for, install them as recommended...
As far as rolling the bar rearwards... what will happen is it wears the nuts off the shoe retainer bolts... and can wear a hole in the outer rear end of the pan. That's if it's on a severe rearward tilt. I sometimes roll mine back if I'm in a rough or rocky field as it will skip over a lot more problems that way.

That is what I'm trying to say, there are no recommendations. Local Dealer can't say where to put them because they are a new dealership and hadn't installed any before and there is no documentation.

Also, if I put one on each end, I had to remove the shoe each time to check the cutter bar oil.

I guess I will stick them on each end. Poor setup if you ask me.
