NH 256 sliding on heavy hay

Could there be something wrong with one of the dogs in the hub or is it just what they do on thick hay. It has the lug tires not car tires. Thanks

If the hay is wet... or the ground is wet or very very heavy hay then they can slide a bit. I'm guessing that you're rolling over a row from a mower rather than raking hay from behind a tedder?

For ground power tires, unless they are two-way lugs, the lugs must be facing the correct way; like reverse direction from a rear tractor tire. Tom

I've saw a few guy's hand a wheel weight on them somewhere near the axle or as far back as you can. Seems to help some.

You may need to ad some weight like fluid in the tires, common on the older 4 wheel rakes with small tires. You might also try a set of tire chains. Same principle as the clutch lift tire sliding on lifting. The old David Bradley would do that at times but had smooth tires but the lugs will not do much good because on top of the stubble they cannot penetrate in the ground to give the traction so aditional weight and in the tire so it doesn't break the frame is the best. Ground drive mowers with the steel wheels will also do same thing.

You maybe on the right track with problem in the dogs. I have seen this before. Jack each wheel up and turn it and see if you can hear the dog clicking before you tear it apart. If you don't hear it you probably have a problem and that greatly effects it's drive power.
