I was just wondering how much hp is need to run a NH 658 baler? We are running one with our massey ferguson which has a just rebuilt engine. She is overheating. She is around a 70hp tractor. We are doing just 4x5 right now, but will have 300 acres next and 4x6 are requested.

If anybody knows the normal operating temp for a Perkins on a mf 275, that would be great, too. She is blowing water at 210. Google is not my friend right now.

Are you absolutely certain that there is nothing wrong with the tractor by way of radiator, fan, air cleaner, front grill screen, or thermostat problems?

Every time I've ever experienced an overheating problem, it was never the equipment's problem. Some have been plugged up grill screens, some have been plugged up radiators, and the most recent was a faulty fan clutch assembly.

Do you keep topping off the radiator after it boils over? Could you be overfilling it each time? Been there, done that too.

Uh yeah. I feel like an idiot.. This field is so dusty and the screens were totally plugged up. Blew it all out and everything is good. I was in freak out mode. We ran crappy equipment for so long and spent a lot of money and lots of time to get everything in tip top shape. I was just freaking that something serious was seriously wrong.

Thanks everybody! Had a good day of baling after blowing the old girl out. Phew!

Yep. Had years when we'd have to clean ours out multiple times a day, and years with virtually no problems (beyond reasonable maintenance).

Better finding something easy and feeling stupid than finding something complex and feeling poor.
