Ford 536 Haybine value and reliability

Hello-

Located a Ford 536 Haybine. Never owned any ford haying equipment before. Anyone know the value of a working Ford 536 9ft haybine? Were these reliable machines? Parts availability? Would you recommend or run from this haybine? Also, were Ford 532 balers any good? Thanks!

Jesse

The 532 baler is a good baler, I have had two, and have one
currently. Doesn't have the capacity of a newer New Holland or
John Deere, but nothing wrong with it. I also have had a 536
Haybine...it had been used VERY hard before I got it, I used it for a
few years and it served its purpose. Parts are still available as its
the same as both a New Idea and Massey 81 haybine. Main thing
would be condition, if it looks like its been looked after, it should
be good. Only real issues I had with mine was going through belts.

The only thing about either piece to keep in mind is parts are
very high compared to New Holland and some others. I think
Owatonna made the mower conditioner and Long made the
baler. I can't speak for the mower but some parts for the balers
are no longer available.

Thanks for the info so far everyone. I am going this weekend to look at both. Any idea on what kind of price the haybine and baler are worth if in working condition? Thanks!

It kind of depends on the area your in but around here, I saw a
good 532 baler go for $1500.00 last year and a good haybine
will bring from $1500.00 to $2200.00, depending on brand and
how good of shape it"s in.

The [b:92f0ffd6aa]535[/b:92f0ffd6aa] is the New Idea machine. The 536 I think was a Owatonna built machine, who is now MacDon.

Can't say on the reliability. We had a 535, and now a New Idea 290. Our main machine is now a Hesston hydro-swing, but we still use this one for hay we need to dry down fast and for swamps as well as unfamiliar territory. We've found the 290 is much more forgiving of foreign objects and obstacles.

Can't say on a 536.

I went to the auction today and picked up the Ford 536 Haybine for $575. Seemed like a good price. Got 3 extra sickle bars with it. Just need to replace some broken guards and the sickle sections. Everything else looks to be in good shape. Ran it on the tractor runs smooth. Belt looks good, hydraulic ram works great, the rubber on the rollers is in excellent shape with no cracking. I will post some picks at the end of this message. Let me know what you think. Thanks for all the replies.

(quoted from post at 13:59:06 06/23/13) Ah thats right, I had a 535...his 536 is definitely a different haybine.

After doing some research online, this haybine is the same as the Owatonna 206 and 216. The Owatonna 197,207,and 217 are very similar too. Not sure what the differences were in the Owatonna model numbers, maybe 7 and 9 foot models? Everything looks pretty good. Had to replace about 7 guards and all the sickles. Hope to get it finished this week and see how it cuts.

I have used/owned one for 7 years. The good - Heavy machine provides a good cut, no wobble box, simple gearbox with belt driving sickle arm. The bad - Cable lift, parts are around from dealers just look hard they are used on multiple brand machines.

Fletcher-

Thanks for the reply on your Ford 536. Mine cuts well too, cable lift is in good shape so far. Problem I have is locating a new tie rod end for the wobble arm. The dealer wants $250 for it and it does not by itself anymore, only comes with the block assembly. Can't see spending this much money on it. I bought an automotive tie rod end that has the same threads and taper of old one. Just have to have my local machinist make a new block that it attaches to. How do these tie rods hold up on your Ford 536? They are the same and there is one on top the wobble arm and bottom.

The machines that I have found that are identicle are the Owatonna 196/206/216 and Oliver 129. Owatonna made this haybine for Oliver and Ford. Gehl haybines also have the same wobble arm parts on some models. Thanks for the reply!
