Oliver 620 Billhook Cam Springs

Got my old Oliver 620 baler in the field. Been missing intermittently. Might tie 200 straight, then miss a few, then fine again. Made several adjustments, and got it working pretty good. Tightening the Billhook cam springs seems to have made the most difference, but I am quite a ways past the manuals recommended 2 turns past just starting to compress the springs.

I am wondering if springs are weak, or am a covering up another problem here? Apparently not available from Agco. Parts guys looked like I tossed a grenade behind the counter when I asked for Oliver baler parts!!

Anyone know what free length is on a new set? Got a feeling I'll be making a trip to the hardware store.

I bale with a 720 now, but used a 620 for a number of years. I always thought "2 turns was a suggestion or a starting point and have gone much further myself. The 620 is more temperamental to varying conditions in the hay field and moisture content. I'd say you got her runnin pretty good.

For parts, I've had good luck with Maibach Tractor in Ohio. (800) 808-9934
They are a helpful bunch there.

Thanks Larry. Can't ask for much better performance, really, and already put enough through it to pay for itself. Glad to hear that about the springs. Might try to source some still, just to have. I'll try Maibach tomorrow.
You are right about conditions. Works perfect, in perfect conditions! Got into some tough wet stuff, just baling ditch plugs mostly, and had all sorts of trouble. 1/2 hour later, humming away in heavy brome, with no problem.
Any recommendation for twine? Using the green sisal from Orschelns now, 7000' stuff.

It would help to know why it fails to tie. Is it pulling the string from the twine holder? Breaking the string next to the knot? Not wiping the knot from the billhook? If it's only breaking the sting when you get into heavy plugs of damp hay then I'd wager that the problem is probably related to twine tension. I've never seen sisal of a quality consistent enough that it doesn't snag somewhat when the baler is being pushed a bit...
Generally the adjustment on the billhook finger is made such that it allows a tight knot to form... but if the adjustment is too tight then it will not wipe the knot off the hook... so you find that happy medium. However, if it's not wiping the knots consistently and won't tie a knot if you loosen the finger adjustment.... you might have too much twine tension... or worn billhooks.
Your op's manual should have an explanation of failed knots in it... if it doesn't you can get an old Ford or NH manual and it will...

Dan off 275 tonight. 7 misses, and a few were my fault. Didn't like the change over from one spool to the next. Windrows go from heavy to light, lots of turning and short windrows, so hard keeping it full. Seems to run best if you throttle down in light stuff. Probably leave well enough alone for now.
Larry, are you using one of those cage type accumulators that Just dumps bales in piles? I'd like to try one in some wide open areas. Who made them? Never see them around here.
Any tips to set one up with plastic twine?
