HELP!! I am trying to refurbish a IH430 baler, i had everything turning correctly with the needles moving etc but now the knotter will not engage when turning by hand and tripping the knotter. Whatever is diving the knotter does not seem to engage and a such does not start the cycle, i can turn he knotter by hand to set needles ect.
This started after i lifted the knotters to clean all old twine from them and whilst in the up position i turned the knotter hub by hand to bring the needles into the chamber to string the twine, since then the knotter will not engage.
Have I wrecked it somehow despite only turning by hand all the time

If it is like any other baler, the needles are not threaded while in the chamber. Are you turning the PTO shaft in the right direction? Should be a knotter brake on it somewhere to keep the needles from moving too freely.

Do you have the All-Twine knotters?

I doubt that you"ve wrecked it, but I wouldn"t be cranking on it with the knotters raised. You probably just need to retime the knotters. It isn"t hard, but you"ll need a manual.

Lots of folks cuss the IH balers, but I"ve found them to be as dependable as the day is long, as long as you set them TO SPECS. Get a manual if you don"t have one already. You"ll never get it right without one.

Hi Rob, It is a few years since I had to work on IH knotters but if I understand you correctly, if you spin the knotter trip wheel until it reaches the trip position and then if you turn the flywheel in the correct direction the knotters will not trip and do a tie cycle? Is that correct?
The assembly is called the "bale length control" and it is shown at caseih.com parts at:
http://partstore.caseih.com/us/parts-search.html#epc::mr54788ar85013

There ar a couple of springs involve, 1 to cause the dog to trip and the other to return the bale control lever to beginning of bale again.
I suspect you accidentally knocked off the trip spring or the mechanism is frozen up with dirt and may require cleaning or lubing with your favourite penetrating oil.

good luck

Thanks, that makes sense, one thing when i went on the case parts site it stated no description for the 430 baler although your link works for the bale length detail, any ideas on how to get the other pages of detail

Hi Bob, the web site was designed for todays kids with ipads/iphones so you have to click on "no description" link and then an index will appear in the right hand window then click on the index and the parts page will open and don't miss the page 1 of x pages and arrow to scroll through the pages of indexes. Not the best web site but it works.

thanks all for the help, i stripped off the knotters for cleaning and to get a better look at the drive and found the trip dog seized, it looks like it has never been cleaned or oiled, anyway its free now and seems fine, trust i can get it going now.
Thanks again
