Best way to sharpen the blade on an AC 160 mower?

How in the world do I sharpen this thing? I can tell as I mow with it that it more... Beats the grass than cuts it. Not sure if it has been sharpened in the last 20 years, honestly.

Also, having never been underneath this thing to scope it out, is there one long blade or two smaller ones?

There were several options for blades, back then, ours had a
blade on each end of the carriage, and a bar, that connected the
2 blades, under the arched center carriage. It has 2 carriage
bolts, big suckers, 3/4", I think, with a cotter pin above the
castle nut. There is also a bushing, that goes into the 1-1/2"
hole in the blades. We always took the snap coupler version of
this mower, and backed it over a hill, and removed the blades to
sharpen. Not being able to see what's under your machine, it
might be easier to use a hand held 4-1/2" hand grinder, to
sharpen them on the machine. You can get blades, but the AC
uses a blade with like 4 or 4-1/2" offset.

hi Will. should be one long blade with flexible tips. to sharpen mine, i stand it on it"s rear end by the hitch with a front end loader and use a 4 1/2" angle grinder. this old guy would rather stand up than lay down. regards, bob

i use a flap wheel on a 4.5" grinder...cuts faster than a grinding disk and less likely to explode during use...also leaves a nice edge.

Hey, thanks for finally ID'ing my bush hog! Got the same exact thing. Mine has 2 heavy blades. I replaced the originals with TSC blades after I broke one, so parts aren't hard to find.

Alrighty, good to know; Thanks!

Also, are those weird bolt holes on the back between those two plates so you can bolt something on the rear of the mower?

The brackets on back are part of tail wheel/rear braces for when the
unit is a snap coupler or 3 point hitch mount.

Yup, took me a while to figure them out.

I replaced the hand link on mine with a hyd cylinder. Much nicer when you have rock and stumps. Also- just in case you didn't know this- NEVER, EVER climb on the deck with the blades spinning to adjust the hand link. If the deck rusts through your legs go right into the spinning blade! Gave me the willies the first time I considered that!

I could see a hydraulic cylinder working well on this. And yes, I make it a point to never get off the tractor while the PTO is engaged ever. This mower can throw stuff everywhere; it has a lot of power.
